50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 1 No. 23 June 9, 1966

The contractor­s of the Pea Ridge water line began laying line Monday morning. Indication­s from the first day’s work shows the company making an average of 800 feet per day.

The Order of the Eastern Star is sponsoring a chicken barbecue dinner Saturday evening, June 11, at 5:30 and will be held in the Community Building. The complete dinner is $1.25 a plate.

The Miss Pea Ridge contestant featured this week is Terry Nelson, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Nelson of Garfield. She will be a senior at pea Ridge High School.

Members of the Pea Ridge Chamber of Commerce, at their regular monthly meeting last Thursday, discussed the possibilit­y of building a medical clinic to attract a physician to Pea Ridge.

Architectu­ral plans for constructi­on of two new elementary classrooms and the addition of visiting team dressing room facilities at the school gymnasium were approved by the Pea Ridge School Board meeting in special session Monday night.

The regular audit of Pea Ridge School District 109 records by the Office of Legislativ­e Audit has turned up some serious irregulari­ties, according to several sources. Auditor Jackie Knight met with district superinten­dent James C. Carlton and assistant su- perintende­nt/high school principal Bill Alveraz and School Board president Ronald Foster May 15.

Scholarshi­ps totaling $40,630 were awarded to PRHS graduates during graduation ceremonies Friday night.

Pea Ridge Park Commission members stand with Billie Jines after the dedication of the basketball court to the late Earle Jines. Commission members include chairman Bob Harp, Loyd Miller, Jim Cheek (son-inlaw of Jines) and co-chairman Mary Rogers.

The old house used in recent years as the Pea Ridge School Administra­tion building was razed to make room for more classrooms. The house was built in the early 1880s by professor John Rains Roberts, founder of Pea Ridge College. The college was founded in 1874 at Buttram’s Chapel and was moved to the site of the Pea Ridge School in 1880. Pea Ridge School Board president Jerry Burton looked over an 1882 newspaper that was used to cover boards in the walls.

Dan Stewart of Pea Ridge was named to succeed David Jones on the Pea Ridge School Board.

Four of six students fac- ing expulsion appeared before the Pea Ridge School Board last Wednesday to plead their cases following a drug-related incident two weeks ago at Pea Ridge Middle School.

Wal-Mart has purchased land in Pea Ridge, but there is no official word on a store coming to the city. The property — a pasture — sits at the northwest corner of Weston Road and Arkansas Highway 72. According to warranty deed, on May 17, Helen R. Miller sold a 36.2 acre parcel to Wal-Mart Stores Inc for $2,177,000.

Graduates from Pea Ridge high School from 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954 and 1955 are planning to reunite Saturday at the high school cafeteria.
