1974 Photo Exhibit

At Home in the Ozarks 1974, a photo exhibit featuring images of northwest Arkansas by Jim Simmons, opened Saturday, June 4, at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History. Simmons grew up in Fayetteville, with family roots in Washington and Crawford counties. After studying architecture at the University of Arkansas, he studied photography and experimental film animation at the California Institute of the Arts. During a semester of independent study at the California Institute of the Arts, Simmons took the photographs included in At Home in the Ozarks. Simmons also pursued graduate studies in fiction screenwriting at Stanford University. After working as a graphic designer, teacher, movie technician and newspaper photographer, he began a career in the video game industry that has spanned more than 20 years. His current photographic work is part personal fine art and part architectural photography for historical and conservation purposes. Today, Simmons lives in New Zealand. At Home in the Ozarks, 1974, will be on display through Jan. 14, 2017.

Fruit Growing

Guy Ames, owner of Ames Orchard and Nursery in Fayetteville, will present, “History Lessons for Today’s Organic Fruit Growers,” at noon Wednesday, June 15, in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History. Ames has more than 40 years’ experience as an organic fruit-grower, specializing in producing both fruit and fruit plants adapted to Ozark conditions. He is also a horticulture specialist with ATTRA, the national sustainable agriculture information service managed by the National Center for Appropriate Technology.

Urban Goat Tending Workshop

Greedy Goats of Northwest Arkansas will hold a workshop on urban goat-tending from 8:30 to 1 p.m. Saturday June 18, at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History. Session One, from 8:30 to 10 a.m., will focus on the basics of smallscale goat raising, including breeds, anatomy, goat psychology, diet, fencing, housing and city ordinances. Session Two, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., will focus on nutrition, health, hygiene, breeding and milking. Both sessions will be led by Greedy Goats owners Connie Rieper-Estes and Jason Estes. Shiloh Saturday Program for Families

Greedy Goats of Northwest Arkansas will be at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History during a Shiloh Saturday program for families from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, June 18. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the goats and their owners, Connie Rieper-Estes and Jason Estes, and find out more about Greedy Goats of Northwest Arkansas, a vegetation land management business that uses goats to clear away unwanted plants such as poison ivy, bush honeysuckle, privet and kudzu.

Butterfly Metamorphosis

Jack Bardwell and Mary McCully, members of Springdale for Monarchs, will present “Monarch Metamorphosis: The Life Cycle of a Monarch Butterfly,” at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 18, in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History. Springdale for Monarchs is a community group working to establish butterfly habitats in and around Springdale.

Celebrity Photo Exhibit

Starstruck, a photo exhibit featuring a lighthearted look at celebrities who have visited northwest Arkansas over the years, opened May 24 and will be on display through Dec. 10.

Barn Party

The Shiloh Museum of Ozark History will host “Barn Party: Pluck and Play,” an acoustic jam session on the museum grounds, from 5:30 p.m. to dusk Friday, June 24. Musicians and music lovers are invited to bring an instrument and a lawn chair and join in. The event is sponsored by the Downtown Springdale Alliance.

Sacred Harp Singers

The Northwest Arkansas Sacred Harp Singers will meet at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 12, in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History.

Herb Society of Northwest Arkansas
