50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 1 No. 27 Thursday, July 7, 1966

Pipe for the new Pea Ridge water supply has now crossed Sugar Creek with constructi­on progressin­g rapidly up the rugged terrain of the Sugar Creek hill. It is anticipate­d that constructi­on of the water line will be completed during this month with Beaver Lake water flowing into city lines immediatel­y after completion.

Although the exact founding date of the Pea Ridge United Methodist Church has been lost in antiquity, the church has selected this year and date in which to note its 100th birthday.

A senior league All Stars baseball team from Pea Ridge is going to Mt Juliet, Tenn., near Nashville, July 26, to represent Arkansas in regional playoffs. The 13- to 15-year-old senior league was the only one official chartered in Arkansas so the local boys won the state championsh­ip without having to compete in state playoffs. Members of the team include Allan Lanham, Cliffy Wilkerson, Rusty Webb, Billy Clark, Lonnie Taylor, Cecil Davis, Mark Casey, David Dye, Johnny Dye, Roger Stival, Joey Wright, Billy Verge, Scott Mendha-nall, Danny Ricketts, Greg Schumacher and Dwayne Archer. Coach is Bill Clark, assistant coaches are Willis Verge, Jim Roe, Ray Hoback, Herman Dye and Doug Houston.

The 37th annual Pea Ridge Community Fair July 9-12 will feature the first Reunion of Queen’s former “Miss Pea Ridge” fair queens from past years. According to Virgie Hazelton of Beta Alpha Sorority which sponsors the fair each year. About 14 former queens have responded that they will attend. As of July 1, former queens signed up are Joyce Widders Hileman, 1958; Jane Wilkerson Joiner, 1960; Betty Self Smyth, 1962; Jane McKinney Cooley, 1963; Nancy Smith Roller, 1967; Penny Hall Schwitters, 1970; Dawn Winter, 1971; Melanie McClain, 1975; Andrea Fletcher Keck, 1978; Mary Mariano, 1980; Christine Bloxham Skaggs, 1982; Kim Hileman, 1983; and Lisa Anderson, 1984.

Organizers of the 47th annual Pea Ridge Community Fair set for July 10-13 on the Pea Ridge High School campus are hop- ing to make this one of the best fairs ever. General cochairman Ruth Talburt and Virgie Hazelton said that Beta Alpha Sorority will once again sponsor and solely present the fair as it has done for about 30 years as the sorority’s main fundraiser for its many civic and philanthro­pic endeavors. The Pea Ridge High School Band and Choir recently performed at the Musical Carousel Festival in Tulsa and earned an overall excellent award for their performanc­es and several students earned individual honors.

Members of the Pea Ridge High School graduating class of 1946 will be parade marshals and lead the Pea Ridge Fair Parade on July 13. “We had the biggest class, but a bunch of them went to the service and graduated after we did,” Mrs. Virgie Hazelton, a member of Beta Alpha and of the Class of 1946.

Anyone who attended Pea Ridge schools is invited to join their classmates for an all-School Reunion Saturday, July 15.

School Board members will meet Monday for a regular meeting which will include an update on the constructi­on of the Junior High School.

Jerry Robinson was sworn in as the newest Pea Ridge postmaster this week.
