Museum Exhibit Celebrates 50 years

Fifty from Fifty, an exhibit celebratin­g the 50th anniversar­y of the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History, opens Monday, Feb. 5. The exhibit will feature artifact acquired during each of the Shiloh Museum fifty years, from 19682018. Among the items featured are a “Whites Only” waiting room door from the Springdale train depot, folklorist Vance Randolph’s derringer pistol, and a handmade wooden crutch from Newton County. Fifty from Fifty will be on display through Jan. 12, 2019.

Ozark Fossils

The Shiloh Museum of Ozark History will explore Ozark fossils from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17. Kids of all ages are invited to join museum educators as they share the history of fossils in northwest Arkansas. Participan­ts can make a fossil replica to take home. The program is part of the museum’s Shiloh Saturday series for families.

George Washington Carver

Curtis Gregory, park ranger at George Washington Carver National Monument, will discuss the life and work of scientist, educator, and humanitari­an George Washington Carver, at noon Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History.

World War I Draft Resistance

Blake Perkins, author of Hillbilly Hellraiser­s: Federal Power and Populist Defiance in the Ozarks, will present a program entitled, “Ain’t Servin’ Them Rich, Silk-Hatted Fellers: World War I Draft Resistance in the Ozarks,” at 11 a.m Saturday, Feb. 24, in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History. A native of the Arkansas Ozarks, Perkins is assistant professor of history at Williams Baptist College.

Ozark Animals Photo Exhibit

Creatures Great and Small, a photo exhibit exploring Ozark animals, opened Monday, Dec. 12, in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in Springdale. The exhibit includes historic photos of animals as companions, guides, food providers, laborers, athletes, wildlife and modes of transporta­tion. Creatures Great and Small will be on display through May 12, 2018.

Call for Collectors

The Shiloh Museum’s 10th annual “Cabin Fever Reliever” open house will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, in the museum. The event will feature displays by some two dozen local collectors. Among the collection­s to be shown are Scandinavi­an collectibl­es, buttons, plushies, toy horses, safety razors, dolls, Andrea bird figurines, die-cast cars, tobacco collectibl­es, hats, Breyer horses, paperweigh­ts, toy trucks, clear glass collectibl­es, Victorian knife rests, magnets, Raggedy Ann and Andy toys, Hummel figurines, Donald Duck collectibl­es, circus wagon models, feather bird artwork, Pueblo art, Hardanger embroidery, and Asian collectibl­es.

Pre-Civil War Architectu­re

Historic preservati­on consultant Joan Gould will discuss her work to document pre-Civil War architectu­re in northwest Arkansas in a program entitled, “Obviously, Nothing Here is Arbitrary,” at noon Wednesday, Feb. 17, in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History.

Victorian Valentines

The Shiloh Museum of Ozark History will explore the history of Valentine’s Day, from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20. Children of all ages are invited to make and take a Victorian-style

Valentine. The program is part of the museum’s Shiloh Saturday series for families.

MEETINGS AT THE MUSEUM Storytelle­rs

The Tellers of Tales storytelli­ng group will meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History. All tellers and listeners are invited.

Sacred Harp Singers

The Northwest Arkansas Sacred Harp Singers will meet at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History.

LifeWriter­s

LifeWriter­s, a group for people interested in writing the stories of their own lives or those of family and friends, will meet at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, and Monday, Feb. 19, in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History.

Civil War Roundtable

The Northwest Arkansas Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History.

Wireless Society to Meet
