Warren grabs top rung in 4A state poll

- JOHN MCGEE Sports Writer

Warren came from behind to take down Southside of Batesville to leapfrog over Robinson and Arkadelphia to be voted the number one position in the MaxPreps CBS football poll.

Stuttgart was shocked by Dewitt by a point to have the largest drop in the ranks. Bauxite, since gaining the services of former Fayetteville coach Daryl Patton, has been getting steadily better in the super tough 4A-7 District. The Miners were by far the worst team in that district but they now rank in the state’s top 5.

Pea Ridge dropped from 13th to 16th after last week’s loss to Harrison, a 5A school. They were at 5A Maumelle this past week and then will finish their pre-conference schedule with a game Friday, Sept. 14, against 5A Farmington.

The need for speed

Watching the Pea Ridge/ Maumelle game and remembering last week’s game at Harrison, I was reminded of something Maverick (Tom Cruise) said to a fellow pilot as he sped along on his motorcycle, 9th 9th 8th 8th 9th 8th 8th 9th 9th 9th 9th 9th 8th 9th 9th 9th 8th 8th 8th 8th 8th 9th 8th 9th 9th 8th 9th 9th No. 33 No. 34 No. 35 No. 36 No. 37 No. 38 No. 41 No. 42 No. 43 No. 44 No. 45 No. 60 No. 50 No. 52 No. 53 No. 54 No. 56 No. 58 No. 45 No. 62 No. 63 No. 64 No. 65 No. 66 No. 68 No. 69 No. 70 No. 71 No. 72 saying “I feel the need — for speed!”

Observers of Arkansas football say, and it is probably true of any state as well, is that the higher classification that you may compete in, the greater the number of players on the field displaying demonstrable speed. Not to denigrate lower scholastic classifications, but the smaller pool of players you have to choose from usually results in less team speed.

In both games we have played this year, we have had problems with hanging onto the football, not surprising with the lack of experience the Blackhawk squad has to contend with. We are playing up in classification for this year and next in our three nonconference games, which means we will be seeing faster and deeper teams than we ever have before in the history of Blackhawk football. In the grand scheme of things, that can be a good thing, maybe even a great thing.

We fumbled four times and twice we were intercepted in the first half against Maumelle. We got burned on deep passes Landon White J.D.
