Old-Time Singing School

The Northwest Arkansas Sacred Harp Singers will hold an old-time gospel singing school in the Shiloh Meeting Hall in downtown Springdale from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26. The school will be taught by Matt Bell of Memphis, Tenn.

“Sacred Harp singing is full of history and tradition that dates back to the 1700s,” said Syd Caldwell, a member of the Northwest Arkansas Sacred Harp Singers. “In the songbooks we use, each note on the musical scale is represented by a different geometric shape. In the old days, this was an easy way to teach folks how to read music,” explained Caldwell.

The singing school will be followed with an oldfashioned singing convention from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. A potluck dinner will be served at noon.

All activities are free. Registration is not required. The Shiloh Meeting Hall is located at 121 W. Huntsville Avenue; the parking lot is accessible from Price Avenue.
