50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 5 No. 5 Thursday, Jan. 29, 1970

The senior Blackhawks hosted the Farmington Cardinals on Jan. 16. The Blackhawks started out determined to win the game as they flew right over the Cardinals. The top scorers of the night were David Patterson, Mike Patton, Jim Brown, John Lasater, Billy Robbins and Jim Walker.

The Pea Ridge School Board voted unanimousl­y to rehire both superinten­dent Andrew Widener and principal William King for two more years. The motion and second were made by Floyd Walker and Jack Lasater. This is the first time the board has awarded a two-year contract.

Jack Lasater of Pea Ridge seeks re-election to a position on the Pea Ridge School Board. He was unconteste­d.

Persons wishing to file as candidates for justice of the peace must file in the office of county clerk Harry M. Pratt by noon June 16. Present JPs in the Mt. Vernon Township (Pea Ridge) are Ernest Hileman and P.R. McLaughlin. In Garfield Township, the JPs are Alvin Seamster and Jane Davis. Dale Shrader is the JP in Sugar Creek Township (Twelve Corners area) and Brightwate­r has two, Billy G. Johnson and Radus Rice.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 15 No. 5 Wednesday, Jan. 30, 1980

Four citizens of Pea Ridge Country have filed as candidates for the boards of education of Pea Ridge and Rogers school districts with the county supervisor of schools, Ben Stephens. For the Pea Ridge District 109 Board of Education, Kenneth L. Patterson and Jerry (J.C.) C. Beaver filed. For Rogers, Janet Lillian Proper Simrell Garfield, and Ron Crabb, Garfield, filed.

Over 70 accidents, including some crashes, but many skiddings and ditchings, were reported in northwest Arkansas Monday as a result of the icy film that covered the areas’ highways and streets. Tuesday night, after roads had been clear most of the day Tuesday, set the stage for another hazardous driving day. Sleet began falling bout 7 p.m. and by Wednesday, the roads and streets were solid sheets of ice. Police Chief Loyd Pifer reports that Pea Ridge was fortunate in that not a single accident was reported.

A barn containing some 500 bales of hay was totally lost in a fire at the farm of J.C. Beaver, Pea Ridge Fire Chief Sammy Spivey reported. Responding to the fire along with Spivey were Jerry Collins, Dick VanLaningh­am, Doug McKinney, Eldon Jump, Argie Miller, Richard Shrum, Dennis Turner, Rick Whitaker, Jamie Beard and David Musteen.

30 Years Ago Pea Ridge Country Times Vol. 25 No. 5 Thursday, Feb. 1, 1990

The Pea Ridge High School Scott HiQ team placed second in its opening match last week, said coach Wade Kniseley.

The Pea Ridge School Board approved last week the recommenda­tion of superinten­dent Marvin Higginbott­om to hire a dean of students/assistant principal and initiate a Saturday detention. Coach Kevin Miller was hired for the remainder of the school year to serve in the position.

Pea Ridge Fire Chief Jerry Collins said he will soon implement a system that will take care of the personnel problem the ambulance service has recently experience­d due to volunteers being out of town for their jobs during certain times of the day resulting in a slight delay in service.

20 Years Ago The TIMES of Northeast Benton County Vol. 35 No. 5 Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000

From Thursday afternoon to Saturday morning, the Pea Ridge area received over six inches of snow. Many people were at jobs and the children were at school when the first flakes began to fall.

For 10 years, Pea Ridge Tax Service has been preparing and filing tax returns for individual­s and small businesses. Staff includes Diana Smith, Delores Story, Shiley Anthony, Walt Heyne, Candi Starner, Tim Starner, Marie Scott and Nila Sizemore.

Eric White, Brianna Wright and Terrie Sue Wilkerson placed first, second and third, respective­ly, in a community essay contest for middle school students sponsored by the Pea Ridge Sesquicent­ennial Committee.

An armed homeowner in Pea Ridge met a wouldbe burglar in his home with a pistol to the nose Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 25, according to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office. The accused burglar, Donald Clay Biles, 45, of Rogers, was arrested and charged with residentia­l burglary.

Seven-year-old Alicia is missing her front teeth, like most second graders. But, unlike most second graders, she is also missing her originally straight long hair. In its place, curls are growing. “Chemo curl,” her mother, Heather Bowker, said, explaining that it is a result of the treatment for Alicia’s illness.

Looking at an entirely new concept in buildings, Pea Ridge School Board members will hear a presentati­on on a fabric covered building from James W. Oldham, president of CIG, Inc., from Springdale, for an activity center at the School Board meeting, Monday night, said superinten­dent Mike Van Dyke.

Keeping up with business, VAS Board members have met three times in two weeks. Board members reviewed the checkbook and learned about issues facing the board including Richard Hurd’s request that VAS vacate the building on his land.
