50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 5 No. 6 Thursday, Feb. 5, 1970

The first homecoming to be observed in basketball here is scheduled for Friday night, Feb. 6, in the local gymnasium. Both senior and junior Blackhawks will play Decatur and the homecoming queen will be crowned.

U.S. Highway 62 from the Ark. Hwy. 72 intersecti­on to Gateway received heavy damage in the recent subzero temperatur­es. Motorists are being urged to use extreme caution when traveling between the Pea Ridge National Military Park entrance and Gateway.

Pea Ridge High School freshman Jim Pierce won a trophy for winning first place in the boys pool tournament at the Pea Ridge Youth Center. Johnny Moss won second place.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 15 No. 6 Wednesday, Feb. 6, 1980

A flue fire at the residence of Doug Blevins, Pea Ridge, brought a response from the Pea Ridge Volunteer Fire Department. Answering the call were Jerry Collins, Tim Wood, Rick Whitaker and Ray Easley. No damage was reported.

A vacant house burned Jan. 30 a mile north of Shady Grove school. Those responding were Fire Chief Sammy Spivey, Jerry Collins, Doug McKinney, James Brown, Ricky Clanton, Fred McKinney, Eldon Jump, Dennis Turner, Rick Whitaker, Jamie Beard, David Musteen and Ray Easley.

Two boys, ages 14 and 15, were found last Wednesday evening at the Garfield gymasium by a concerned resident who was told by the boys that they had been “kicked out” by their parents.

A 30-unit, $480,000 apartment complex slated to be built in Pea Ridge still faces hurdles. Bob DuBois met with the Pea Ridge Planning Commission on several occasions for the purpose of rezoning the 4.84-acre site located north of the old First Federal building off Ark. Hwy. 94 south.

The owner of Oak Ridge Lodge said last week that he plans to build three duplex units just north of the existing facility. Owner Larry Gois said the investment would amount to approximat­ely $200,000.

Pea Ridge High School principal Tom Chew introduced the Pea Ridge Green Partnershi­p Program as an effort to improve the appearance of the school campus. Chew said that the initial Green Partner is Beta Alpha Sorority, the members of which have agreed to improve a section of the school grounds by planting and maintainin­g flowers.

Mark Neimeyer’s fifthgrade classroom is a quiet beehive as students at each table work on a variety of projects. He calls it a cooperativ­e format.

Gary Black of Bentonvill­e announced Feb. 1 that he is once again a candidate for Benton County Judge — this time as a Republican. Black was an unsuccessf­ul Democratic candidate for the position in 1998.

“Don’t give them any more money,” John Cody, city councilman, said, making a motion to decline the mayor’s request to move funds from one account to another to make a payment for the Weston Street project at a special council meeting Tuesday morning. Deficits in workmanshi­p in the project prompted three of four City Council members to decline the request from the mayor for $106,484.34 to make a previously approved payment.

Pea Ridge school students will lose two days of spring break and attend school on one Saturday to make up days lost to snow days. As of Tuesday, eight instructio­nal days had been lost due to snow this year.

“We are not going to survive,” Sharon Barnett, treasurer for Volunteer Ambulance Service board of directors, said at the regular Finance Committee meeting.
