50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 5 No. 12 Thursday, March 12, 1970

Garfield Mayor Coen Ross said Monday that the contractor in charge of laying the lines for the town’s new water system said that the water should be ready to be used in the homes and businesses of Garfield by Friday, March 20.

Frank Price of Pea Ridge was named Arkansas State Fiddling Champion.

An Easter egg hunt will be held on the school campus sponsored by the local Jaycees and Jaycettes.

Fifty-four votes were cast last Tuesday for Jack Lasater, who was the only candidate seeking a place on the Pea Ridge School Board. Lasater, who sought re-election, had been appointed to the board some weeks ago to fill the unexpired term of Lee Otis Hall, who resigned.

Pea Ridge’s city government took the next steps required to move along, in time, towards the constructi­on of a sewer system and plant Thursday evening by adopting a new water rate ordinance and setting a public hearing on a sewer rate ordinance.

Coaches of the 1-A West conference selected Jim Roe, Pea Ridge basketball coach, as the coach of the year for the 1979-1980 school year. This is the second year in a row he won. Coaches selected the all-district basketball team which included three Blackhawks — Rusty Webb, Brently Wilkerson and Cliffy Wilkerson. Webb and Brently Wilkerson were submitted for All-state.

A discussion of road repairs and dogs running loose in the corporate limits occupied members of the Garfield City council at their meeting Friday night. Mayor Dennis Mitchell presided at the meeting which included alderman Howard Ross, Buddy Seamster, Paul Pratt and Allen Carter and city clerk Jane Davis.

Pea Ridge Planning Commission will hold a public hearing April 3 to consider a request from Francis Freette to rezone property now zoned agricultur­al to residentia­l. The property involved is open land just west of the church of the Nazarene on Arkansas Highway 72.

Former Wal-Mart executive Jack Shewmaker will be the headline speaker for the April 7 Pea Ridge chamber of Commerce annual meeting, according to chamber president Joyce Hale.

Pea Ridge school superinten­dent Marvin Higginbott­om accepted a check for $5,000 from Bank of Pea Ridge officers Valeria Ash and Barbara Owen. The money is a donation which school officials plan to use on improvemen­ts to the physical plant.

Nancy Campbell-Sharp has reason to be proud of her Pea Ridge Junior High School gifted and talented class, which placed third in recent regional Odyssey of the Mind competitio­n.

Pea Ridge Mayor Mary Rogers expressed disappoint­ment last week after the Lowell City Council tabled action that would have created a municipal court shared by the two cities. Rogers said that Lowell Mayor Glenn Rogers had led her to believe that the two council could approve the joint court at the Lowell meeting on March 13.

Pea Ridge no longer has a town marshal. The City Council eliminated the position and the system last week. In its place is a Police Department, just like those in most every other city in the state. Police Chief Sam Holcomb, formerly city marshal, said, “I don’t know how many city marshals there are left in the state, but I’m sure we were one of the last.”

Pea Ridge Planning Commission denied a request by the Church of God for a variance to its one-acre requiremen­t for churches at its meeting March 7. The church had requested permission to put a church on a lot that was a little over one-half acre on the north side of Pickens.

The smoke and thunder of artillery rising above Pea Ridge National Military Park weren’t echoes from the 1862 battle, there were part of a re-enactment staged for filming of a new orientatio­n movie for the park. Acting superinten­dent Doug Wilson said the film was scheduled to be 12 to 15 minutes long. As luck would have it, snow fell on the park March 11, the first day of shooting battle scenes, accurately simulating conditions the day of the battle 138 years ago.

Surrounded by family and friends, Virginia A. Leach Kelly Wylie celebrated her 99th birthday. There were five generation­s of her family with her at Autumn Place to celebrate her birthday.

Councilman John Cody had nothing to say about his arrest. Cody was arrested for DWI and refusal to submit to a breathalyz­er test following the March City Council meeting. He is also Garfield street and water superinten­dent and a candidate for Benton County Justice of the Peace.

This November, three municipal seats in Pea Ridge are to be considered. The mayor’s seat, currently held by Jackie Crabtree, and two City Council positions — those held by Bob Cottingham and Nadine Telgemeier.

Athletic facilities were reviewed in a special meeting March 17 by Pea Ridge School Board members.
