50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 5 No. 24 Thursday, June 11, 1970

It was a glad day when the manufactur­ers of Glad Bags last Thursday formally announced the coming of a $20 million plant to Rogers.

Governor Rockefelle­r was photograph­ed shaking the hand of Cathy Green Morrison, a 1969 graduate of Pea Ridge High School. Morrison was on the staff of the Rogers Daily News.

An 18-year-old Pea Ridge student, Jesse Dale Laughlin, was treated and released at Rogers Memorial Hospital Saturday following a one-car accident near Pea Ridge. State Trooper Keith Ferguson, who investigat­ed, said Laughlin was traveling north on Arkansas Highway 94 4.3 miles north of Pea Ridge when he lost control of the 1965 Oldsmobile he was driving.

The Rev. Carrol Renfro was named the new pastor of the Pea Ridge United Methodist Church. He replaces the Rev. Tom Barnett who has entered St. Paul Seminary in Kansas City. Renfro will also pastor the Oakley Chapel church.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 15 No. 24 Wednesday, June 11, 1980

Local civic organizati­ons, under the leadership of Alpha Nu chapter, ESA, are sponsoring a chicken barbecue June 12 at the Pea Ridge School cafeteria. Proceeds will help defray medical expenses of the Shrum family who suffered a double blow in recent weeks. Their 17-year-0ld son, James, was critically injured in a traffic accident May 10 and remains in Washington Regional Medical Center, Fayettevil­le. And, last Wednesday, Richard Shrum suffered a stroke and was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Floyd McGinnis, otherwise known as Pea Ridge’s own Santa Clause, said the building housing his stock of articles for the needy will be closed as he’s been doing this for 12 years and needs a rest.

The 31st annual Pea Ridge Community Fair will be July 8-12, according to Marian Cabaniss, chairman. The Miss Pea Ridge Queen contest will be July 9.

Meeting with Congressma­n John Paul Hammerschm­idt was the high point of their vacation in Washington D.C., according to Floyd and Opal Creekmore, Pea Ridge.

If Keith Boldt has his way, Cannon Ball Expo will right up there with the big boys in arts and crafts shows in a few years. And, if Boldt’s plan is fruitful, what is known as Coddling’s Corner may never be the same again. Boldt is developing the northeast corner of the intersecti­on of U.S. Highway 62 and Arkansas Highway 72.

The president of Beta Alpha Sorority said booth space is still available for rent at the Pea Ridge Community Fair July 10-13.

The 911 emergency telephone service will be in effect in Benton County beginning Wednesday, June 20, said Benton County Judge Bruce Rutherford.

At least 14 PRHS graduates earned academic scholarshi­ps this year to one or more colleges and universiti­es, officials announced. Thirteen of the seniors, said counselor Bill McIver, earned the scholarshi­ps “by having high grade point average and/or high American College Testing scores.”

Hiring and pay raises occupied the School Board at its regular meeting Monday night. Teachers will receive an additional $350 in their last paycheck this year and then, for the next year, the $350 will be added to the base salary on the certified pay schedule.

Wanda Mahurin, Garfield mayor since 1989, resigned her position at Garfield’s City Council meeting, citing health reasons.

A plea agreement was reached in the murder case involving a teenager, so the public may never know exactly what caused Justin Trammell to kill his father. Trammell, 15, was accused of shooting and killing his father with a crossbow.

Having an advanced life support ambulance in the rural are of northeast Benton County area just got one step closer to reality. Leaders

of the Northeast Benton County Volunteer Fire Department met with members of the Volunteer Ambulance Service for the transition­al contract period.

Work on streets in town should begin soon. Bids for the drainage work on streets were opened and the low bid from Seven Valleys Concrete was accepted.

Teeing off on one of the five tee boxes of the first hole at Big Sugar Golf course, the second hole remains unseen. At hole two, the cart path ascends around a curve protected by a log-made guardrail and nothing is around but sparse houses, thick woods and then the green.

School Board members were asked to reinstate the athletic hour during the school day for cheerleade­rs.

Elizabeth Ash, covaledict­orian at PRHS, was one of several students honored at a reception for 2010 high school honor seniors of Arkansas at the Governor’s mansion May 1. She was pictured with her parents, Steve and Lawanda Ash, and Gov. and Mrs. Mike Beebe.
