50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 5 No. 40 Thursday, Oct. 1, 1970

Meeting in regular monthly session Monday, the Pea Ridge School Board hired Mrs. Ruby Paden of Rogers as a high school teacher, voted to repair the floor of the gymnasium and voted to install a light in the parking area of the elementary school.

A new troop of Boy Scouts and the organizati­on of Cub Scouts in Pea Ridge were officially begun at a meeting held Thursday night at the school cafetorium. Ed McCray was named scoutmaste­r and Clymer Cooper was named Cub Master and Master Scout. A total of 17 boys were in attendance — four Boys Scouts and 13 Cubs.

A powder puff football game is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 2. The game will be in the Pea Bowl.

Blackhawks went to Greenland Tuesday, Sept. 8. It was a tough game, but Pea Ridge won by a score of 128. Halfback Derrall David scored first on a 43-yard run. Quarterbac­k was Randy Easterling.

More donations of cash and facilities for the rebuilding of the Corinth Community building have been reported by Elmer Dent.

The Pea Ridge City Park Pavilion Fund reached a total of $1,260.46 this week.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office reported noted possible theft of property based upon a call from Daryle Greene, Pea Ridge, to Deputy Bill Peters. Green found some native rocks missing from his son-inlaw’s constructi­on site. He called Pea Ridge patrolman David Fellows and then Peters was called in. The stone was to be used by Bobby Long at his home.

Pea Ridge realtor Gold Calvin, honored recently as realtor of the year by the Rogers Board of Realtors, is in Hot Springs this week to receive further recognitio­n at the Arkansas Associatio­n of Realtors annual convention.

Pea Ridge Elementary School will soon begin an after school tutoring program in response to unsatisfac­tory performanc­e in last spring’s Arkansas Standardiz­ed Testing Program’s Metropolit­an Achievemen­t Tests. Counselor Luella Hershberge­r said between 100 and 120 elementary students may be involved.

More than 4,000 people are expected to attend the second annual Pea Ridge Lions Club Mule Jump on Saturday, Oct. 13, said Lions Club president Dale Wagner.

Students transferri­ng to Pea Ridge Elementary School will find instant friendship awaiting them through the Ambassador Program, the project of counselor Luella Hershberge­r.

Discussion of water lines outside the city limits occupied the majority of the Pea Ridge City Council meeting Tuesday, Sept. 26. The council faces the problem of reimbursin­g individual­s who have paid substantia­l costs to help build water lines outside the city limits when others outside the city limits want to hook on at a lower cost.

Emergency personnel worked to get a trapped driver out of a rolled cement truck on Slate Gap Road in Lost Bridge Village Friday. Harold Lillegard of Garfield was pronounced dead at the scene.

At 10 a.m. Oct. 14, the “Mule Jumping Capital of the Ozarks” will host the 12th annual Internatio­nal Mule Jump at the Pea Ridge City Park on Arkansas Highway 265.

A forum for the four mayoral candidates is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 12, in the community room of the Emergency Services Building and is open to the public. Mayor Jackie Crabtree is seeking re-election. Also seeking the seat are Rick Webb, Joe Hart and Boyd McNiel.

Mayor candidate Col. F. Joe Hart, 89, denies he twice ran for mayor in the 1990s, even though numerous newspaper articles prove he did. His races in 1990 and 1994 were noted in a story that ran in the Sept. 29 issue of The TIMES. Hart called The TIMES and left a message saying: “I don’t think I’ve ever run for mayor before.”

A playground with a slide, climbing wall, rung ladder and crawl tunnel, a pavilion and a half basketball court are scheduled for the new city park to be built on the land adjacent to City Hall and Station 1 of Northeast Benton County Volunteer Fire-Department at Garfield.
