50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 6 No. 9 Thursday, March 4, 1971

Moving into handsomely remodeled quarters in the downtown business section of Pea Ridge last Friday and Saturday was a new business, Shaw’s Furniture, TV and Appliance. the business had been located in Rogers for the past 2 and a half years.

Voters in the Pea Ridge School District will cast their votes next Tuesday at the Pea Ridge City Hall in the annual school election. Three candidates seek the post to the County School Board — Richard Beaver, Mrs. James (Carrie) Wright and Royle Carnes.

Harlan Phillips and son, John, of Bentonvill­e, of plan to construct a new 12,000-square foot supermarke­t in Pea Ridge — the first in town on a spacious tract of land north of the Bank of Pea Ridge, on the north side of Lee Town Road and Arkansas Highway 94 about six blocks south of the main business district in town.

A town meeting at the Pea Ridge City Hall Thursday drew an attendance of more than 70 interested persons from both inside the city limits and in the outlying rural areas — and following an informativ­e session of questions and answers between the people and the city officials ended with a unanimous backing of the people to a proposed improvemen­t in the local fire department which include the purchase of a new fire truck and laying water lines. Fire Chief Harold Hard was in charge of the public forum.

“Full speed ahead,” said Russell Walker when Pea Ridge Mayor Lester Hall called for comments from the public at the public hearing on the ordinance authorizin­g the issuance of water/sewer revenue bonds for the constructi­on of an improved sewer system.

A program called a “First Responder” course in emergency first aid is being presented to Pea Ridge firemen and police. At the first session in the second floor conference room of City Hall, 14 people were present. The course is 48 hours, according to Fire Chief Sam Spivey.

Mayor Lester Hall called for a special meeting of the City Council in response to a request from the attorney for John Demaree for a hearing for the purpose of seeking reinstatem­ent of Demaree as a deputy city marshal.

When Mayor Mary Rogers authorized the insertion of a questionna­ire in January in the Water Department bills, she said she predicted what would receive the greatest response about what Water Department customers believed should be done with the city’s share of a 1-cent county tax. Streets was the answer by 95% of the respondent­s.

The Pea Ridge City Council heard a report from Gary Campbell, president of the Highway 62 Business Associatio­n, who asked that the council consider the purchase of a sign on the new U.S. Highway 71 bypass to face traffic coming from the north to lure traffic to Arkansas Highway 72 and on to U.S. Hwy. 62 as the best route to Eureka Springs, Silver Dollar City and Branson.

Pea Ridge’s 1952 tanker truck recently went to Mr.

Goodwrecnc­h for a checkup. The prognosis: terminal engine. Department officials are searching for a new engine for the truck.

The School Board tabled for a fourth month any decision on a proposed track facility as members of the Middle School Advisory Committee projected the district would double in size when all the homes in the Big Sugar Subdivisio­n are built and the district will have other needs.

A new route has been developed to connect Pea Ridge to the rest of the world. CenturyTel recently introduced Internet access to Pea Ridge, enabling users to send and receive email, conduct business, do research and tap the vast expanse of informatio­n available on the World Wide Web — at the click of a mouse.

Fred’s held its grand opening Friday in cold, rainy weather. Regional manager Jerry Clay presented a coffee maker to the oldest person waiting in line, Ann Howard, 80.

The fields are peaceful now. The deer, squirrels, rabbits and raccoon, along with tourists, provide the only activity. But, these serene hills and fields were covered with soldiers, horses, cannons and blood 149 years ago as the Battle of Pea Ridge, a Civil War battle, raged for two days, March 7-8, 1862.

Using technology to enhance their effectiven­ess and be more efficient, Pea Ridge Police have recently upgraded including adding software that enables police to talk to inmates at the Benton County Jail if they have a court appearance.

The Regional Chamber of Commerce of Northwest Arkansas and Southwest Missouri combined forces with the Northeast Benton County Volunteer FireEMS Department to host the fifth annual Business Expo Saturday in the Garfield Community room.
