50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 7 No. 33 Thursday, Aug. 17, 1972

The city of Pea Ridge now has a park. Final transactio­ns for the purchase of the park were made last week and the matter was cinched at Thursday night’s City Council meeting when the council voted to accept the five-acre tract being purchased by the Pea Ridge Little League and deeded to the city with the city to furnish water pipe to the tract and to pay the water and electricit­y bills for the park and the LL to maintain and operate the park. The property is on Weston Street.

A new chief of police was hired for the city of Pea Ridge. The City Council voted in executive session to hire Ronald Towle on a permanent basis. The Council voted to retain Al Koenke as city marshal for another 30 days.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 17 No. 33 Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1982

Pea Ridge’s City Council head a progress report on the sewer project constructi­on, received a resignatio­n from patrolman Ed McBryde, approved an employment agreement for roof work on City Hall and the fire station, took steps to terminate the firemen’s pension and relief fund and handled routine matters at its meeting Thursday.

As the fall political season is warming up and the deadline for municipal office candidates (Sept. 17) is nearing, talk of who’s running and who’s not is getting warmer in Pea Ridge country. Pea Ridge will vote for mayor and four aldermen. Mayor Lester Hall said “I have no idea” when asked if he plans to seek re-election. City recorder Lee Hall has two more years to go.

Pea Ridge High School’s football team plays its first game Sept. 3 here against Lincoln.

A former alderman is the first to file a petition for the Pea Ridge City Council. Deadline for filing is Sept. 4. Joe Hart served on the council in 1989 and 1990, but lost his bid for to unseat Mayor Mary Rogers in 1990.

Pea Ridge head football coach Kevin Miller likes what he sees on the practice field this year. There were 34 students on the varsity team.

Pea Ridge postal carriers collected an estimated 700 pounds of food last Friday for the Pea Ridge Area Ministeria­l Alliance.
