After incorporating a plethora of pink in the video announcing her second pregnancy, posted to her Instagram on Aug. 8, and then dressing her growing bump in various rosy hues in the following months, Carrie Underwood had a lot of fans thinking pink. So it came as a surprise when the “Cry Pretty” singer revealed that she and husband Mike Fisher, 38, are in fact expecting another boy while she was cohosting the 2018 Country Music Association Awards with Brad Paisley on Nov. 14. “I’m still trying to get myself into the duet category,” Underwood, 35, jokes to People about singing with baby on board. Equally hard to get into: her glamorous gowns. “I’m squeezing myself into
things that are not meant to go on this body!”
And yet she’s never felt better in the skin she’s in. With the secret of the baby’s sex now revealed (“Willie, it’s a Willie, okay!?” she said onstage after Paisley jokingly asked for a hint as he peppered her with country singer names), Underwood is able to focus on this happy time. She’s counting her blessings a year after a dangerous fall outside her home left her with 40 to 50 stitches in her face. In September the star opened up about suffering three miscarriages on the road to baby No. 2. “I was like, ‘Why on earth do I keep getting pregnant if I can’t have a kid,’ ” she told CBS of the time she cried, asking God for answers.
Now well on her way to motherhood again (she hasn’t shared her due date) and with the release and promotion of her sixth LP, Cry Pretty, behind her, Underwood is finally slowing down and getting ready to spend what she says will be a “quiet” Christmas at home in Nashville. Preparing 3-yearold Isaiah to be a big brother, though, might take some work. “He told me recently that when the new baby comes that Daddy could have that baby and then he could be mine,” Underwood says. “His world is about to get rocked.” Still, she says, her husband indeed deserves a little extra baby love. “Isaiah is my guy, he loves me like nobody else on this planet,” she said. “But maybe this next one will be all Mike’s. He needs some love too.”
The American Idol winner plans to bring her expanded family out on tour with her next May. And she’s feeling extra thankful this year—for all she has and all she’s gotten through. “It’s been great,” she says of her whirlwind 2018. “But it is going to be nice to take a breather.”
