World War I brought to extraordinary life

DOCUMENTARY One of the real masters of digital moviemaking, Lord of Rings director Peter Jackson has done something remarkable (again). Commissioned by Britain’s Imperial War Museums to make a documentary commemorating the end of World War I in 1918, he not only restored century-old black-and-white footage from the front lines—he colorized it and transformed it into 3D. We walk through the narrow trenches and watch in awe as shells explode on the horizon, sending plumes of smoke and dirt our way. Most memorable, however, are the faces of the men in close-up, their eyes alive with inarticulate emotion. Old has been showing exclusively in one-night engagements. The next is Jan. 21 on 1,000 screens. Try to find it and see it. ( fathomevents.com, R)
