…WITHOUT WHOM THIS ISSUE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE
Sarah Jordan is a National Magazine Awardnominated writer who lives in Philadelphia. She has written extensively on the arts, fashion, and style for national and regional magazines and newspapers. She is the author of four books. For this issue of Philadelphia Style, Jordan interviewed artist Leila Cartier. Behind the story: “Leila showed me her collages in her sun-filled studio, located in a funky South Philly rehabbed factory. Then, sitting on her great-grandmother’s glamorous cream-colored sofa—among piles of fashion magazines— Cartier talked art, art history, about growing up in Kentucky, about grandparents emigrating from Syria and Lebanon, and her evolution as an artist.” On Cartierõs work: “She uses jewelry collages to address concepts of time—eternal and fleeting— and the seductive power of visual pleasure. Her work has a smart toughness and chicness embedded in each piece.”
