RAY OF HOPE

-

Toby Strogatz wanted to do more than just make beautiful handbags. So the style-minded life coach and yoga guru set out to fuse the worlds of fashion and philanthropy with her accessories collection Mim & Ray.

“We call it fashion with a purpose,” says Strogatz, who teamed up with Kleinlife, a Philly nonprofit that enhances the quality of life for people of all ages and backgrounds, for her passion project. “Our ultimate goal is to empower as many people as possible.”

Each bag is designed by the creative team at Tobystephen Designs Inc. and features wool detailing hand-knit by Kleinlife’s senior members. The handbags are then finished in Italy by skilled artisans with a note tucked inside about the knitter. Strogatz was so inspired by Kleinlife’s mission that she named Mim & Ray after Miriam and Raymond Klein, who established the organization in 1975.

Statement totes are label standouts, with contrasting and complementary wool accents set against leather and alligator in fall-ready shades like black, navy, chocolate brown and lipstick red. Or reach for fanny packs adorned with tassels or wristlets splashed with “XOXO” and “Yes!” The metallic silver Jennifer Bag, named for Strogatz’s daughter, doubles as a conversation piece with its piercing blue eyes.

“Mim & Ray handbags are not just an expression of great style,” says Strogatz. “It’s an expression of great humanity.” $275-$695, Joan Shepp, 1811 Chestnut St.; mimandray.com – Michelle Mass
