Duquesne rallies, 17-7

Mccoy fuels Dukes’ ground attack with 125 yards, one TD

-

Duquesne notched its first win of the season with a 17-7 win against Dayton fueled by senior running back Larry McCoy and his 125 yards rushing.

In addition to his 125 yards on 27 carries, McCoy added a crucial late-game touchdown that put the Dukes (1-1) up by 10 points with just a few minutes remaining.

Duquesne pulled out the victory against the Flyers despite trailing for the majority of the game.

After the Dukes got the scoring started with a 26-yard field goal from kicker Charlie Leventry that put them up, 3-0, the Flyers (0-2) responded on their next possession, getting a 2-yard touchdown run from running back Will Bardo that put them up, 7-3.

That score held for the next 37 minutes, but with about 10 minutes remaining in the game, Duquesne senior quarterback Sean Patterson connected with junior wide receiver Gianni Carter on an 18-yard touchdown pass, giving the Dukes a 10-7 edge.

Just under seven minutes later, McCoy finished off an 80-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown run that gave Duquesne a double-digit lead with 3:03 remaining.

Patterson finished the game 18-for-26 passing for 187 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He also rushed for 53 yards.
