2012 WEEKLY LOG SHORT HOPS
Sept. 1
Texas calls up 19-year-old SS Jurickson Profar. He becomes the first player born in 1993 to play in the majors.
Sunday
Profar makes more news. He homers in his first major league at-bat, hitting one in the third inning of the Rangers’ 8-3 win vs. the Indians.
Monday
The Phillies beat the Reds, 4-2, in a Labor Day matinee. It’s news because loser Johnny Cueto had been 11-0 with a 1.61 ERA in day games this season.
Tuesday
Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins doubles off Reds P Mat Latos to become the fourth Phillies player to reach 2,000 career hits. He joins Mike Schmidt (2,234), Richie Ashburn (2,217) and Ed Delahanty (2,207)
Wednesday
In earning his 18th win in a 6-2 win vs. the Mets, P R.A. Dickey becomes the first Mets pitcher to reach 18 wins since 1990 (Frank Viola, 20-12, and Dwight Gooden 19-7).
• The struggling Yankees, who’ve seen most of a 10-game lead disappear, hold a team meeting. Included in the meeting: club director of mental conditioning Chad Bohling. Yes, they actually have one and that is his title. If you think about it, that is the greatest difference between big markets and small markets.
Washington rookie Bryce Harper hits two home runs in a 9-1 win vs. the Cubs to give him 17 for the season. They are the third-most by a teenager. Only Tony Conigliaro (24) and Mel Ott (18) hit more before turning 20.
Friday
Detroit’s Max Scherzer strikes out nine in a 3-2 loss to the Angels to regain the AL strikeout lead from teammate Justin Verlander, 213-209. If they were to finish 1-2 (either order), they would be the first teammates to finish a year 1-2 in strikeouts since the Cubs’ Kerry Wood (266) and Mark Prior (245) in 2003, according to STATS, LLC.
• 3:05 a.m. It finally ends. Ryan
Braun becomes the first player in Brewers history with five 100RBI seasons in dramatic fashion, beating the Cardinals, 5-4, with a home run in the top of the 13th. It ends a game that lasts 4 hours, 30 minutes … after a rain delay of 2:20.
