Man admits not paying tax on lottery winnings

A man who opted not to pay taxes on his Pennsylvan­ia Lottery winnings pleaded guilty Friday to tax evasion and faces sentencing Feb. 15.

Sherman W. Friend, of the unincorpor­ated McClelland­town community in Fayette County, was indicted in April for having other people cash in his winning lottery tickets in 2009 and 2010 to avoid paying taxes on combined income of about $481,000.

U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab will decide his sentence. today whether the state opposes the proposed pact.
