Penn State women’s volleyball easily defeated Bowling Green in three sets for a home win in the second round of the NCAA tournament, 25-15, 25-12, 25-15. Micha Hancock had five aces and eight digs and Ariel Scott added eight kills for the Nittany Lions (31-2). Penn State will play Kentucky in the third round Friday in West Lafayette, Ind.

Landon Donovan scored the tiebreakin­g goal on a penalty kick in the 65th minute, and David Beckham left MLS as a two-time champion with the Los Angeles Galaxy’s 3-1 victory against the Houston Dynamo in the MLS Cup in Carson, Calif. Omar Gonzalez tied it in the 61st minute with a long header for the Galaxy. Beckham will play elsewhere in the new year, but he hasn’t disclosed his immediate plans.

Lindsey Vonn raced to her 13th World Cup victory at Lake Louise, Alberta, leading another 1-2 U.S. sweep in the second downhill at the Canadian resort. Vonn finished in 1 minute, 52.9 seconds to edge teammate Stacey Cook by 0.52 seconds. Friday in the season-opening downhill, Vonn beat Cook by 1.73 seconds.

• Matteo Marsaglia of Italy took big risks on a challengin­g super-G course for his first World Cup victory in Beaver Creek, Colo. Marsaglia finished in 1 minute, 14.68 seconds to edge Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway by 0.27 seconds.

• Germany made a strong showing in World Cup luge, with victories in men’s doubles and women’s singles before a home crowd in Koenigssee, Germany. Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt led the men with their second victory of the season and their 12th World Cup win overall. Among the women, Natalie Geisenberg­er edged defending and Olympic champion Tatjana Huefner by 0.031 seconds.

• Jason Lamy Chappuis of France took the lead in the Nordic combined World Cup event by winning the 10-kilometer ski race in Kuusamo, Finland.

Penguins winger Tanner Glass has signed with HC Banska Bystrica of the Extraliga in Slovakia. Glass, signed as a free agent this summer, joins teammates Evgeni Malkin, Dustin Jeffrey and Deryk Engelland on the list of NHL players who have sought work in Europe because of the NHL lockout.

Penn State women’s soccer will play North Carolina in the national championsh­ip game at 4 p.m. today after defeating Florida State, 2-1, Friday. The Tar Heels (14-5) defeated Stanford, 1-0, Friday to set up today’s game against the Nittany Lions (21-3). The game will be televised on ESPNU.

Olympian Missy Franklin won the 200-yard backstroke for her third title and Kevin Cordes set an American record in winning the 200 breaststro­ke at the Winter Nationals in Austin, Texas. Franklin was timed in 1 minute, 49.18 seconds, just off the American record of 1:49.16.
