AROUND THE MAJORS

-

National League

Cardinals 4, Brewers 2: Matt Holliday’s two-run home run in the sixth inning stunned Wily Peralta with St. Louis’ first hit, and rookie Shelby Miller (13-9) blanked Milwaukee into the seventh inning. Matt Carpenter and Matt Adams added RBIs in the seventh and eighth for the Central leaders, who are 4-0 to begin a nine-game homestand. After a day off, the Cardinals built on momentum from a three-game sweep of the Pirates. Miller is 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA in four starts against Milwaukee.

Cubs 9, Reds 1: Welington Castillo drove in three runs with two home runs, Donnie Murphy added a two-run shot and even pitcher Edwin Jackson smacked one as visiting Chicago rolled to a victory against suddenly punchless Cincinnati. Jackson hit his second career home run in the seventh on his way to his first win in seven starts since July 31. The Reds saw their streak of consecutive scoreless innings reach 15 since a walkoff win Sunday against Los Angeles before Zack Cozart and pinch-hitter Corky Miller hit consecutive doubles with one out in the seventh.

Nationals 6, Mets 3: Jayson Werth kept up his power surge with a home run and two doubles, leading charging Washington past host New York for its fourth consecutive win.

Braves 4, Marlins 3: Julio Teheran (12-7), working on 10 days of rest, overcame a rough first inning and pitched into the seventh to help visiting Atlanta beat Miami.

Padres 8, Phillies 2: Jedd Gyorko and Chase Headley each had three hits to back Andrew Cashner’s strong pitching as visiting San Diego beat Philadelphia.

American League

Red Sox 2, Rays 0: Clay Buchholz (10-0) allowed three hits over five innings in his first start since early June and East-leading Boston beat host Tampa. Jonny Gomes and Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in runs for the Red Sox, who extended their lead over the Rays to 8 1⁄2 games.

Yankees 7, Orioles 5: Alfonso Soriano hit two home runs, including a tiebreaking shot in the eighth inning, and New York ended a six-game losing streak at Camden Yards. Mark Reynolds also homered for the Yankees, who won for the second time in six games to bolster their postseason hopes.

Royals 6, Indians 3: Jeremy Guthrie (14-10) got a major assist from his defense in pitching six innings, Alcides Escobar hit a rare home run and Kansas City snapped a six-game losing streak in Cleveland to close on the Indians and two others in the cramped wild-card scramble. With the win and Tampa Bay’s loss, Kansas City pulled within three games of a wild-card spot.

Angels 12, Blue Jays 6: Mark Trumbo matched a team record with four extra-base hits as visiting Los Angeles beat Toronto. Trumbo had a career-best five hits and became the first player in Angels history to collect five hits and score five runs in the same game.

Twins 4, Athletics 3: Josh Willingham hit two home runs, including a two-run shot in the eighth that put host Minnesota in front for good.

Tigers 9, White Sox 1: Rick Porcello pitched his first career complete game and visiting Detroit snapped a three-game losing streak.
