Apple to debut curved screens
TAIPEI, Taiwan — Apple is developing new iPhone designs including bigger screens with curved glass and enhanced sensors that can detect different levels of pressure, said a person familiar with the plans.
Two models planned for release in the second half of next year would feature larger displays with glass that curves downward at the edges, said the person, declining to be identified because the details aren’t public.
Sensors that can distinguish heavy or light touches on the screen may be incorporated into subsequent models.
33-year fugitive surrenders
BALTIMORE — A Baltimore man who had been a fugitive for 33 years after escaping from the state’s prison system turned himself in to authorities in Oklahoma.
Anthony Rackley, 62, is being held in the Oklahoma City jail and will probably be extradited to Maryland, a spokesman for that city’s police department said.
Mr. Rackley was arrested last Monday after he told police that he was being extorted by someone who knew about his escape, according to a report in The Oklahoman newspaper.
Ousted lawyer slams filing
NEW YORK — A lawyer for the federal judge removed from cases concerning the New York Police Department’s stop-and-frisk policy said Sunday that the city’s attempt to have her orders vacated is bringing “character assassination into the judicial process.”
City lawyers had filed papers Saturday asking the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to vacate U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin’s orders that require changes to the controversial practice.
Average gas prices fall
CAMARILLO, Calif. — The average price for regular gasoline at U.S. pumps fell 14.57 cents in the past two weeks to $3.2171 a gallon, according to Lundberg Survey Inc.
The survey was conducted Friday and is based on information obtained at about 2,500 filling stations.
The average, which reached a year-to-date peak in the survey of $3.795 on Feb. 22, is about 32.9 cents below the year- earlier price of $3.5454 a gallon.
Lady Gaga designs logo
LOS ANGELES — Lady Gaga is lending some of her artistic eye and star power to USA Today’s pages in advance of the singer’s new album, “ARTPOP.”
USA Today says a logo featuring an image of a statue of the pop provocateur will appear in today’s editions of the newspaper’s “LIFE” section.
The newspaper says Lady Gaga is the first guest contributor to design a logo for the newspaper. The logo was designed in collaboration with the performer and artist Jeff Koons, who designed Lady Gaga’s cover art for “ARTPOP,” due out Tuesday.
The singer has sold nearly 9 million albums on her way to becoming one of music’s more colorful figures.
