A chance to win HGTV’s 2014 $2 million house, plus its furnishings from Ethan Allen
Through Feb. 14, millions of people will click on www.hgtv. com hoping to win the 2014 HGTV Dream Home, a 3,200-square-foot timber, steel, stucco and glass retreat on a golf course near Lake Tahoe, Calif. But only one person will get the $2 million house, a GMC Yukon Denali and $250,000 in cash from Quicken Loans.
Your odds are much better of winning furnishings that Ethan Allen provided for the threebedroom, 31⁄ 2- bath house on one-third of an acre in Truckee, Calif. For the eighth year, the company has supplied all furniture, area rugs and accessories and most of the artwork for the Dream Home. The Ethan Allen Facebook Dreamstakes (www. ethanallen.com) offers a chance to win pieces used in various rooms in the house. The prizes will change every two weeks through March 1:

The retailer has also put on sale nearly every item used in the house. In the second-floor media room, that includes the three-piece Cheshire leather sleeper sectional ($8,142.30 on sale), Randall leather recliner ($ 2,276.10), Bryant chair ($1,277.10), Corbin ottoman ($593.10) and Meyer large coffee table ($899.10). The room also features a unique armillary chandelier made from iron and wood that measures 34 by 26 inches. It’s on sale for $1,529.10 through January.
Much of the Dream Home’s decor, chosen by designers Jack Thomasson and Linda Woodrum, straddles the line between rustic and contemporary. So does its architecture, whose style was dubbed New Mountain by architect David Bourke.
He made its thick wooden roof trusses and earthquake-resistant steel fame the defining features of an H-shaped building featuring 88 huge windows or glass walls.
“I wanted a modern floor plan that emphasizes indooroutdoor living and natural light,” he told Oliver Marks, a writer who detailed the house’s design and construction on www.hgtv.com.
The house’s outdoor spaces are just as beautiful. The front courtyard and back patio are linked by a glass-enclosed, slate-floored breezeway that forms the center of the H. From the patio, you can see the Schaffer’s Mill Club golf course and panoramic views of the Carson Mountains and Martis Valley. Fir, spruce and Ponderosa and Jeffrey pine trees, some 100 years old, frame the views.
Developer John Marlin, builder Kreg Rowe and project contractor Mike Efstratis strived to save as many trees and boulders as possible during construction. Landscape contractor Lebo Newman used both native species and plants adapted to but not invasive in this alpine climate 6,000 feet above sea level. Growing among native white fir trees and groundcovers bearberry and squaw carpet are bristlecone and mugo pines, Oregon grape, chokecherry and blue oat grass.
