Look out for these fashion trenders
Tonight the Oscars will cap awards season — and it’s been a fashionable road along the way.
We’ve seen highlights, lowlights and looks we’d rather not see again. In no particular order, here are the ladies and men anticipated to be the night’s style standouts based on their fashion picks at past award shows:
Lupita Nyong’o: She’s established herself as fashion’s new “it” girl, landing a spot on Vogue’s list of rising style stars to watch. Plus, she was spotted last month making the rounds at New York Fashion Week, even sitting next to Vogue editor Anna Wintour at Calvin Klein’s runway show. So far she’s impressed in vibrantly colored gowns by such designers as Gucci, Dior and Ralph Lauren.
Angelina Jolie: This star has been scarce on the awards show circuit this year (although she and partner Brad Pitt did sport some coordinating tuxedo looks on the BAFTA red carpet a few weeks ago). She’s slated to be a presenter at the Academy Awards. Will she pull out a Hollywood glam look like the white Versace gown with the swipe of scarlet across the collar from the 2012 Golden Globes? Or will she bring sexy back with her memorable skirt slit and show some leg?
Matthew McConaughey: He’s a man who knows how to embrace style. Emerald velvet blazers, sharp-yet-subtle prints, a maroon suit and tie, a casual beige suit from Hugo Boss and many looks from Dolce & Gabbana have helped him make his mark on the red carpet — and his stunning and equally style savvy wife, Camila Alves, never hurts.
Brad Pitt: As the first male face of Chanel, he knows how to marry ruggedness with elegance like the best of them. Lately he’s kept his presence pretty classic with the traditional black tux, crisp white shirt and bow tie.
Cate Blanchett: She’s showed off several iterations of sophistication this awards season. At the Golden Globes she brought the drama in a black lace-and-sheer gown by J. Mendel. For the Screen Actors Guild red carpet, she softened things up with a blush halter-style dress by Givenchy.
Anne Hathaway: Like Ms. Jolie, Anne Hathaway’s red carpet style made a splash in the past but this year has been largely out of the spotlight. She
will be presenting an award at the Oscars. At last year’s ceremony she was pretty in pink thanks to a slimming Prada pick, complemented by a cute pixie cut.
Bradley Cooper: He’s been show-hopping at fashion weeks in New York and London to support his girlfriend, model Suki Waterhouse. On the hunt for red carpet clothes, perhaps?
Pharrell Williams: Weeks after the Grammys, the music producer’s tall brown Vivienne Westwood hat (dubbed by the masses “the Arby’s hat”) still is stirring talk. Now it’s for sale on eBay with bids already surpassing $15,000. Will his Oscars style also be meme inspiring?
Jennifer Lawrence: It’s a done deal that J-Law will wear something by Dior due to her relationship with the French fashion house. She tends to stick with full silhouettes, such as the pale strapless look from last year’s Oscars. In January, people took to Twitter to share their takes on her white Golden Globes gown by snapping photos of themselves wrapped in blankets held together with black bands. It would be refreshing to see her try something a bit different, such as a column dress with a pop of color.
Jared Leto: Our interest in his man style at the Oscars can be summed up in four words: man-bun or no man-bun?
