A good story gone viral

-

Devon Still was on Cincinnati’s practice squad for little more than a week, but his was a story that attracted national attention this week. Distracted and distraught since his 4-year-old daughter was diagnosed with cancer in June — and also nursing a hamstring injury — the Bengals cut Still, a 2012 secondround draft pick from Penn State, at the end of the preseason. But far from the cold, business-like mind-set that often comes into play during NFL personnel decisions, the Bengals re-signed him to their practice squad the next day, allowing him to keep his medical coverage. Monday, they added him back to their 53-man roster. More than that, the team announced it would donate proceeds from his jersey sales to Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati and pediatric cancer care and research. By midweek, his No. 75 jersey became the team’s top seller. More than 1,000 were ordererd at $100 apiece, including 100 by New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton. “They could have washed their hands with me and said they didn’t care about what I was going through off the field,” Still said. “It’s like a blessing in disguise for me.” — From wire dispatches
