RiskRis takers stand out on red carpet

- By Sara Bauknecht

FollowingFollow a soggy spell of weather, fabulous s fashions flooded the Golden Globes red carpet,t, the first major one of the 2015 awards season. The trendst fell right in step with what has s been seensee on recent runways: whites and winterr pastels, navies, structure, low-fuss hair, sparse e makeup and some sparkle. But those who stolee the show were the celebs who brought a freshh take to typicalt (and, too often, predictable!) red d carpet style.st RosamundRosam Pike led the night’s risk takers, s, daring tot bare a lot of skin in a white cutout-laden n Vera WangWa gown just a few weeks after having a baby. AnotherAn fashion force to be reckoned withh was sing singer Lorde, who was on trend with a crop p top layeredlaye with a boxy blazer and pants for an n androgynousandrogy vibe. She kept it feminine, though,h, with a statements necklace and slicked-back ponyy

with a deep side part. Meanwhile, Emma Stone stunned in a jumpsuit with beaded strapless bodice and a voluminous bow above the bum. And then there were the glamour girls who brought to life modern interpretations of classic Hollywood allure. Last year’s “it” girl Lupita Nyong’o continued her red carpet reign in a lilac Giambattista Valli with a petaled applique bodice. Jessica Chastain and Kate Hudson were va-va-voom in Versace, with plunging necklines. Amy Adams also opted for Versace, hers in a pale periwinkle that popped against her porcelain skin and red hair. This year’s style starlet to watch, Felicity Jones, lived up to anticipation in a full-skirted teal Dior gown with regal high collar and Victorian-esque button detailing down the back. Jennifer Lopez represented the cape trend in a champagne beaded frock that left little leg to the imagination. The couple to beat were (no surprise!) the Clooneys, who made their first red carpet appearance as husband and wife. Amal Clooney emitted elegance in black Dior with white gloves she sewed up herself, hubby George said. She accessorized her white box clutch with a “Je Suis Charlie” pin as a sign of support to the people of France in the wake of last week’s terror attacks. For every style showstopper, there was a handful that underwhelmed, bored or just befuddled. Naomi Watts looked sharp in a belted, canary yellow Gucci gown, but it felt like something that has been seen before. The same went for Reese Witherspoon (silver Calvin Klein) and Allison Williams (ruby Armani Prive) and Emily Blunt (white strappy Michael Kors). Claire Danes and Lena Dunham made smart picks with a dark feathered Valentino and a red asymmetrical Zac Posen, respectively, but the dresses looked ill fitting and failed to flatter. And then there was Keira Knightley, who was the unexpected fashion flop of the night in a Chanel dress with nature motif and matronly collar. The guys kept it classic with black tuxedos (with the occasional charcoal and navy mixed in), crisp white shirts and the traditional bow tie. Some saw the occasion as an opportunity for self promotion. Ryan Seacrest wore himself: the Ryan Seacrest Distinction men’s collection. But if it looks good, why knock it?
