Cain drops appeal after seeing video

-

After seeing footage that MLB has of him throwing the haymaker in a brawl with the White Sox last month, Lorenzo Cain dropped his appeal of a twogame suspension Sunday. Along with missing the series finale against Detroit, he will miss Tuesday’s game against Cleveland.

“I had a hearing tomorrow. Then people I spoke to said I had zero chance of winning, so get it knocked out and get back to playing baseball,” Cain said.

When asked why, he replied with a smile: “They had some really good angles.”

The Royals have played a handful of testy series this season, but Cain — who has been hit by pitches four times already — finally had enough in Chicago. The usually mild-mannered outfielder said even his friends and family were surprised by the way he lashed out.

Rangers

Yu Darvish misses being on this road trip with his Texas teammates for reasons beyond fellowship as he recovers from season-ending elbow surgery. The Japanese right-hander joked his English is suffering because he’s not using it as much. Darvish wants to improve his command of the language enough to pursue dual citizenship. “I asked the team if they can help me with my English,” Darvish said through an interpreter, while noting that Miami’s Jose Fernandez, a Cuban native, recently became a U.S. citizen. “I would like to get the citizenship.” There is no timetable for Darvish to start throwing again.

Astros

Houston extended its top run since a 12-game winning streak in 2004. At 18-7, Houston set a team record for its best record through 25 games. The Astros are coming off a 70-92 season, which followed three consecutive years of at least 106 losses.

White Sox

An illness continues to infiltrate the Chicago clubhouse. Outfielder Adam Eaton has missed three games and was sent home Saturday. “Hopefully, he’ll be ready to go Tuesday,” manager Robin Ventura said. “Tyler [ Flowers] has that and [ Adam] LaRoche had it a little bit yesterday.” Flowers, a catcher, did not play Sunday and LaRoche started at first base but was removed in the fifth inning.

Brewers

Shortstop Jean Segura left after he was hit on the helmet by a pitch from the Cubs’ Pedro Strop (0-1) in the eighth. Segura initially took first base after he was examined by the training staff for several minutes. He then was replaced by pinchrunner Hector Gomez.
