Scherzer’s parents see son’s no-hitter

-

A day later, Max Scherzer couldn’t stop smiling.

“I’m doing great,” the Nationals right-hander said the morning after he threw a nohitter Saturday and came within a strike of a perfect game before hitting the Pirates’ Jose Tabata in Washington’s 6-0 victory.

“I didn’t get much sleep, but that’s for a good reason, just on a high from the game.”

Scherzer came within one strike of throwing the 22nd perfect game in major league history since 1900.

Scherzer’s parents were on hand at Nationals Park to see his accomplishment. Brad and Jan Scherzer decided to visit this weekend from Missouri instead of next month.

“It was great to be able to share [Saturday] night with them, as well,” Scherzer said. “That’s what my dad wanted [for Father’s Day]. He doesn’t want a tie. I gave him a no-hitter, so he’s pretty happy.”

Angels

Los Angeles pitcher Jered Weaver was placed on the 15-day disabled list and will have an MRI on his left hip. One day after Weaver suffered his fourth consecutive defeat in the Angels’ 4-1 loss to Oakland, the Angels decided to put the right-hander on the DL to give his sore hip time to rest. Outfielder Alfredo Marte was called up from Class AAA Salt Lake City to take Weaver’s roster spot.

Red Sox

Boston claimed catcher Erik Kratz off waivers Sunday. Kratz was designated for assignment June 11 by the Kansas City Royals. He had been limited to four atbats this season and went on the disabled list May 4 with left foot plantar fasciitis. He hit .214 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 15 games on a rehab assignment with Class AAA Omaha. Kratz, 35, has also played with the Pirates, Philadelphia and Toronto in the majors.

Diamondbacks

Arizona sent Bronson Arroyo and last year’s firstround draft pick Touki Toussaint to the Atlanta Braves for infielder Phil Gosselin. Arroyo, 38, has not pitched since having Tommy John surgery July 18. He signed with Arizona as a free agent before last season after eight years with the Cincinnati Reds, three with the Red Sox and three with the Pirates. Gosselin, 26, has been on the 15-day disabled list since May 18 with a fractured left thumb. He was hitting .325 (13 for 40) with four doubles and two RBIs in 20 games.

Yankees

Right-hander Sergio Santos will have season-ending Tommy John surgery, and left-hander Jacob Lindgren is set to have a bone spur removed from his elbow. New York made the announcement about Santos Sunday, two days after the oft-injured reliever was placed on the disabled list with elbow inflammation. Lindgren, who was taken in the second round in the 2014 draft and made his big league debut May 25, was optioned to Class AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre June 13. The team tweeted that the rehab and recovery period should be no more than 12 weeks.

Orioles

Baltimore optioned righthander Kevin Gausman to Class AAA Norfolk Sunday before the team’s win against Toronto and recalled right-hander Oliver Drake from Class AAA. Gausman was activated off the disabled list to make his first start of the season in a 5-3 win Saturday. Drake was 0-1 with 11 saves and a 0.76 ERA in 21 games at Norfolk.
