Donald Trump speaks for many and can’t be bought
Donald Trump is not my candidate. If voting in the primaries as an independent were allowed, I, too, would register as unaffiliated just as letter writer Oren Spiegler has. However, Mr. Spiegler (“The GOP’s Trump,” July 13) is underestimating the draw of Donald Trump for those who are just plain tired of the typical political rhetoric of Republican/Democratic/Socialist candidates.
Mr. Trump has tapped into the anger and frustration of Americans who have worked hard to provide for their families and mind their own business and yet are characterized as racists and told they lack compassion. These families are the soul of America. They feel used by a government that is supposed to protect them.
Most candidates speak under the direction of wordsmiths hired to keep their comments from becoming fodder for the press. Mr. Trump’s raucous, public life has no secrets. He speaks his mind and brings to light hard facts that seem cruel but are true just the same. He cannot be compromised by innuendo or threats of extortion. He can’t be bought. This terrifies the Democrats and Republicans alike. Unlike most candidates, Donald Trump is not obsessed with winning the presidency. As with all his ventures, he is obsessed with being successful at doing what he says he will do … saving America.
I agree that Donald Trump will never win the nomination. What he will do for certain is make sure the issues are not clouded by politically correct rhetoric. Donald Trump does not “belong” to the GOP … he belongs to Donald Trump. CHERI R. NEELY
