Man, 32, fatally shot outside Wilkinsburg store

A man who was shot Wednesday outside a Wilkinsburg store died at UPMC Presbyterian less than an hour later, a supervisor with the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office said.

County police Lt. Andrew Schurman said the shooting happened about 4:15 p.m. outside Cousins Corner Market, located at Montier Street and Laketon Road.

The victim was identified by the medical examiner’s office as Kelvaughn Hawthorne, 32, no known address.

Hawthorne, who was shot multiple times, ran about 10 feet and collapsed before he was taken to UPMC Presbyterian, where he died just after 5 p.m., officials said. An autopsy is scheduled for this morning.

There was no known motive for the shooting.

Lt. Schurman said the suspect, a black male armed with a gun, was seen fleeing the shooting scene in a white sedan down Laketon Road.

Plum police officer chosen for post at high school

Plum police Officer Scott Ricketts will be the new school resource officer at Plum Senior High School this fall.

Officer Ricketts, who is a Navy veteran and has been on the Plum force since 2003, will replace former school resource officer Mark Kost, who retired in June.

Officer Kost spent 13 of his 25 years on the Plum force as the district’s resource officer at the high school.

He was reassigned earlier this year to duty at O’Block Junior High School after two high school teachers were charged with institutional sexual assault in connection with what police said were sexual relationships with female students.

After that reassignment, Resource Officer Joseph Little, who was assigned to the junior high school, moved to the high school.

However. at the start of the 2015-16 school year, Officer Little will return to the junior high school, and Officer Ricketts will be assigned to the high school.

Officer Ricketts, who was chosen by both police and school officials, is a native of Plum and a graduate of the high school.
