Yankees will call up pitcher

For New York Yankees fans angry that they didn’t get more done by the nonwaiver trade deadline, general manager Brian Cashman offered a consolation prize.

Top pitching prospect Luis Severino, 21, a righthander whom fans have been clamoring to see for more than a year, will make his major league debut next week in a home series against Boston, Cashman said.

Severino is 7-0 with a 1.91 ERA at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He made his most recent start on Wednesday, striking out 10 while allowing three hits in six scoreless innings.

“He’s earned it and we need him,” Cashman said. “So we’ll see what the next step is for this youngster who is moving really fast through the system.”

The Yankees rotation is hurting.

“I like the team we have,” Cashman said. “I know that we are dealing now with some recent trouble and we certainly are reacting to that trouble ... to kind of try to fortify. At the same time we will be relying on our farm system as we have done all year.”

Dodgers

Clayton Kershaw’s next start for Los Angeles was bumped to today, and Zack Greinke was moved up to start Friday night against the Angels. The Dodgers announced the switch four hours before the Freeway Series opener. “As much as anything, we’re just making sure that everything’s good,” manager Don Mattingly said.

Blue Jays

David Price’s arrival in Toronto was delayed by a flat tire, a story that played out on Twitter with fans offering to rescue the pitcher. This former American League Cy Young Award winner, traded Thursday to Toronto, posted a message just after 10 a.m. saying he had blown a tire. About an hour later, he posted again to say he couldn’t find anyone to fit a new tire on his car. Blue Jays fans replied, telling the ace they would pick him up wherever he was waiting. One fan cautioned “If you change the tire ... RIGHT HAND ONLY!!!”

Angels

Los Angeles placed lefthander C.J. Wilson on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow inflammation. Wilson is 8-8 with a 3.89 ERA this season for the Angels. He yielded six runs and six hits in four innings in a loss Tuesday in Houston.

White Sox

Billy Pierce, one the most dominant left-handed pitchers in Chicago history, passed away. He was 88. Pierce had his No. 19 retired by the White Sox in 1987. The left-hander remains atop the franchise’s career strikeouts list with 1,796, and is fourth in wins with 195. “Generations of White Sox fans lost one of their heroes,” White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said.
