Russell Wilson signs fouryear extension worth $87.6 million.
Those worries about quarterback Russell Wilson hitting free agency or the Seattle Seahawks having to use a franchise tag are now tabled for another five seasons. Wilson is locked up in Seattle for the prime of his career after signing an $87.6 million, four-year extension Friday that includes a $31 million signing bonus.
The contract slots Wilson slightly behind the Packers’ Aaron Rodgers and just ahead of the Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger in the hierarchy of quarterback contracts on per-year average.
“For me I just want to be paid based on what I’m worth, what I’ve produced, whatever that means,” Wilson said. “For me, I just let the play speak for itself.”
The Seahawks opened training camp without AllPro free safety Earl Thomas, who is on the physically-unable-to-perform list after having left shoulder surgery earlier in the offseason.
Joining Thomas on the PUP list are defensive backs Jeremy Lane, Tharold Simon and wide receiver Paul Richardson.
Bills
Prosecutors said they dropped a battery charge against offensive line coach Aaron Kromer, who was accused of punching a boy in the face for using his beach chairs in Florida.
Jets
Rookie wide receiver Devin Smith will miss the majority of the remainder of training camp after breaking some ribs in practice at training camp. The team announced Friday that Smith was being hospitalized overnight as a precaution after getting hurt earlier in the day while making a catch.
Cardinals
Arizona signed cornerback Shaquille Richardson. Richardson was drafted by the Steelers in 2014 and spent most of the season on the practice squad before being released Oct. 15.
