Students add ghostly touch to golf course

August, “with a good response,” said Mary Luxbacher, a member of Crafton’s recreation board. The Crafton Public Library has used it, and a Girl Scout working for her gold award will hold a Golf with Santa fundraiser in December as part of Crafton’s Light Up Night activities on Dec. 3.

Crafton’s public works employees have been involved in golf course maintenance, Crafton manager Ann C. Scott said.

Grim’s Ghostly Golf is a fundraiser for the high school student government, said social studies teacher Laura Begg, who is student government adviser.

“They make a little money, and this year they will use it to spruce up the outdoor patio [at the high school] that is the ‘senior privilege area’ outside the cafeteria,” Ms. Begg said. Employees of the Lowe’s store in Bridgeville have been giving students information on how to work on the retaining wall and pavers on the patio, she said.

The soccer team also has helped get the ghostly golf course ready along with students in high school teacher Michael Kozy’s STEAM — science, technology, engineering, arts and math — class.

“I grew up in Crafton and have many fond memories of that golf course,” said Mr. Kozy, a 1988 Carlynton graduate. “It was a mainstay in the community.” The price was always right “and there were jobs for kids. My brother, Mark, and I worked there,” he added.

His students have been looking at the course with an eye to making some of the holes more interesting and more challenging. About half of the holes on the 18-hole course do not have a “trick” or interesting obstacle, the students observed.

One of the holes has “a windmill but the blades don’t turn,” Mr. Kozy noted.

“Students have come up with some really elaborate ideas,” Mr. Kozy said, but they don’t necessarily know how to make their ideas work.

They’re working on that in the classroom and hope to be able to make some changes on the golf course in the spring.

Grim’s Ghostly Golf, at Steuben (Route 60) and Linden streets, across from Crafton Park, is open 6 to 9 p.m. weekdays and 3 to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 30. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children age 12 and younger,
