Brashear and NFL

-

It’s not often you see two former City League players from the same school on NFL rosters at the same time. But it sort of has happened for Brashear.

John Wetzel is a 2009 Brashear graduate who made the first start of his career Monday night with the Arizona Cardinals. Wetzel, an offensive guard, played at Boston College and spent time on the practice squads of the Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts the past few years before signing with the Cardinals in December 2015.

Meanwhile, Manasseh Garner, another Brashear graduate, was recently signed to the practice squad of the Buffalo Bills. Garner, a tight end, played at Wisconsin and then Pitt.

Central and colleges

Central Catholic has more football players on college teams than any other high school in the state.

That’s according to a study done by Lateral Sports and the HS Athlete College Guide that was recently released by Maxpreps.com. The study showed the high schools that have produced the most college athletes this fall in football, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball on the NCAA Division I, II and III levels, as well as NAIA. Central Catholic had an impressive 34 former players on college rosters at various levels.

Of any high school in the state, North Allegheny had the most athletes (64) playing all of the four fall sports.

Kentucky and Carmody

The Mars basketball team had a high-profile college coach at its workout Monday night. Kentucky coach John Calipari came to watch Mars junior Robby Carmody.

Carmody, a 6-foot-4 guard, has numerous scholarship offers from major colleges. There is no offer from Kentucky, but you can now count the Wildcats among the interested.
