Vanka 75th event
“Applaud the Light,” a program of the 75th anniversary year celebration of Maxo Vanka’s 1941 murals, will begin at 8 p.m. Nov. 4 in St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church, 24 Maryland Ave., Millvale.
The evening will include performances by singer-songwriter Mike Stout, soprano Anna Singer (WQED-FM), members of the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh and cellist David Bennett; poetry by historian Charlie McCollester; and readings by David Demarest Jr. and Peter Oresick in memory of longtime murals advocates.
New permanent lighting by Rob Long and Clear Story will be unveiled for four of Vanka’s 1937 murals, “Crucifixion,” “Pietå,” “Croatian Mother Raises Her Son for War” and “Immigrant Mother Raises Her Sons for Industry.”
A dessert and coffee reception will follow the performance. Tickets, $10 in advance and $15 at the door, may be purchased at www.vankamurals.org. Proceeds will benefit the next stage of the murals conservation project, the 1941 “Battlefield Scenes.”
