Armstrong County crash claims life of city man

A Pittsburgh man died in a car crash Saturday morning in Armstrong County, authoritie­s said.

John W. McCoy, Sr., 53, was a passenger in a car that veered from Route 268 in Sugarcreek shortly after 11 a.m. and struck a tree.

He was pronounced dead at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital from injures sustained in the crash, county coroner Brian K. Myers said.

Route 268 was covered with snow, but investigat­ors suspect the driver was speeding and using drugs or alcohol when the crash occurred, Mr. Myers said.

Pennsylvan­ia State Police from the Kittanning barracks at first did not provide the driver’s name but said he was a 55-year-old man from Pittsburgh. He suffered a “moderate injury” in the crash, police said. 2000.

Father Scanlan was born in 1931 in Cedarhurst, N.Y. He received his bachelor’s degree from Williams College and law degree from Harvard in 1956.

After serving as staff judge advocate in the Air Force, he decided to become a priest and was ordained in the Franciscan Third Order Regular in 1964.

Father Scanlan served five years as dean and director of the honors program at the College of Steubenvil­le and five years as rector-president at St. Francis Seminary in Loretto before being named president at Steubenvil­le.

No dates or times have been set yet, but the university said there will be a viewing and memorial mass there and a Mass of Christian Burial at the Third Order Regular Motherhous­e in Loretto.
