Former Franciscan U. president dies at 85

-

The Rev. Michael Scanlan, who transformed the struggling College of Steubenville into the Franciscan University of Steubenville in the 1970s, died Saturday morning, the university announced. He was 85.

Father Scanlan served as president from 1974 to 2000, chancellor from 2000 to 2011 and as president emeritus since retiring that year. He died at Garvey Manor, a Catholic nursing home in Hollidaysburg, Pa.

Father Scanlan took over Steubenville College in 1974 when it had just over 1,000 students and substantial debt. Using his background as a Harvard-educated lawyer, he led a period of growth and change at the school — paying off debt by 1983, adding graduate programs to become a university, introducing religious training programs and increasing enrollment to more than 2,100 by minutes after the end of the Steelers AFC Wild Card game, but it announced Saturday afternoon that the two-car trains will run all day. The Penguins also have a game at 5 p.m. today.

Additional light rail vehicles will be put into service between Station Square and Allegheny Station from noon until the start of the game at 1:05 p.m., and extra vehicles will also be sent to pick up riders from Allegheny Station following the conclusion of the game, Port Authority said.

The regular fare for adults is $2.50 with a ConnectCard or $2.75 with cash, while the fare for children ages 6-11 is $1.25 with a Kids ConnectCard or $1.35 with cash. Children under 5 ride free with a fare-paying adult.
