Nothing wrong with name dropping

-

His Monopoly board worn down and life-sized Scrabble missing a few letters, The Dribbler decided to play the name game Monday night and all of the WPIAL and City League’s top scorers were in play.

If The Dribbler were looking for a part-time job, maybe he’d get in touch with Austin Butler. A new hobby? Craig Weaver might be able to give him some tips. Maybe The Dribbler wants some fast food. Would Mitchell King hook him up with a burger?

The Dribbler went to the store and bought some goldfish this week. He thought about bringing Andrew Petcash along to pay for them. If he wasn’t available, hopefully Johnasia Cash would be free. The Dribbler was in a hurry, making him feel like he was Daeja Quick or Kolton Rush.

Some questions The Dribbler wants answered: Why doesn’t Nelly Cummings wear a band-aid under his left eye? Has Sydney Wolf ever met Wolfie Moser? He could go on and on ... A 3-3 week (two more games were played last night) pushed The Dribbler’s season record to 35-16 (.686).

Here are his thoughts on this week’s top games:

Boys

Allderdice at Obama, 7 p.m. today — As Omar from The Wire once famously said, “You come at the king, you best not miss.” Well, Obama gets its shot at the king today. Allderdice has won City League regular season and playoff titles the past three seasons, but if Obama wins this clash of coleaders, you have to like its chances of at the very least splitting the title. Allderdice won the first meeting, but the Dragons have been up and down lately. Winner: Obama.

Moon at Mars, 7:30 p.m. today — We know. This game is going to be out of this world. The Dribbler is a sucker for corny one-liners, but that line is played out more than Tom Brady and the Patriots winning Super Bowls. Who will win the WPIAL Class 5A title? Throw the names of about six teams in a hat, draw one, and that pick is as good as any. However, Moon might be asserting itself as the favorite. The Tigers have won six in a row. Make it seven. Winner: Moon.

Beaver at Beaver Falls, 7:30 p.m. today — If Beaver loses this game, somebody better use the headline “Beaver falls to Beaver Falls.” It would make The Dribbler’s day. Have you ever rode the Log Jammer at Kennywood? These teams know about log jams. They’re involved in a big one in one of the strongest sections in the WPIAL. Kind of like football, right? Beaver Falls beat Beaver late in the regular season to reach the playoffs, which eliminated Beaver. Winner: Beaver Falls.

Belle Vernon at McGuffey, 7:30 p.m. today — Surprise! McGuffey and Belle Vernon are tied for the 4A Section 3 lead. Just three years ago, McGuffey went 220. A year before that, Belle Vernon finished 3-18. And now here they are, McGuffey hunting its first section title in 15 years and Belle Vernon aiming for its first since 2008. Belle Vernon held McGuffey to a seasonlow 40 points in a Leopards’ win last month. McGuffey is 8-0 at home. Winner: McGuffey.

North Hills at Pine-Richland, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday — Pine-Richland is three games away from history. No team other than New Castle has finished the regular season undefeated in the WPIAL’s largest class since 1993. Pine-Richland is 19-0. Of its final three games, this is the biggest test. Pine-Richland edged North Hills, 65-63, in the first meeting courtesy of Sean Colosimo's 3-pointer. Perfection continues. Winner Pine-Richland.

Latrobe at Fox Chapel, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday — Speaking of perfect records, Fox Chapel was a few points away from having one. It lost to Penn Hills by three a month ago. No losses before. No losses since. Coach Zach Skrinjar has done an excellent job with this team. His father, Dick, was the longtime communications director for PennDOT. He knew a thing or two about potholes. Zach hopes his team won’t fall into one against highscoring Latrobe. Winner: Fox Chapel.

Girls

Bishop Canevin at South Fayette, 1 p.m. Saturday — They play in different classes, but in a lot of ways, they’re mirror images. South Fayette is a reigning WPIAL champion. Bishop Canevin, too. Neither has lost since Jan. 7. Bishop Canevin has won seven games in a row. South Fayette carried a sevengame win streak into last night. The Dribbler is excited to see how the 5A playoffs unfold. South Fayette might be the best of a deep group of contenders. Winner: South Fayette.

Brentwood at Vincentian, 7:30 p.m. Monday — New class, same results. That has been the story for Vincentian, which has continued its winning ways since moving up to 2A. The Royals have won at least a split of the section title six years in a row and hold a one-game lead in Section 2 over a Brentwood team that hasn’t been crowned section champ in 23 years. The Dribbler has to side with history and a talented Royals squad led by Caroline Elliott. Winner: Vinc en t i a n
