We must get serious about voting safeguards
Never mind the soul-searching as to why Hillary Clinton didn’t win the election. How many votes were lost, thanks to old, unstable voting machines, uncounted provisional ballots and, of course, purging of voters?
New voting machines are a must. Paper trails are a must. Safeguarding results are a must. Exit polling is a must. Nobody should be removed from the rolls without six weeks’ notice so the error can be rectified. Is anyone paying attention?
It’s later than you think. The Republican-led U.S. House Administration Committee voted Feb. 7 to eliminate the Election Assistance Commission, which was intended to help states improve their voting systems. The full House now could take up the measure. Virginia’s gubernatorial primary is June 13. LORRAINE LOISELLE

and inclusive communities that welcome people from all walks of life and levels of income. We want private development to continue. It grows the population, the tax base and the local economy. This is great for Pittsburgh!
We also need to ensure development happens in a manner that helps all residents take advantage of the neighborhoods’ economic growth and gives people choice to remain in a neighborhood. The mayor’s executive orders are great steps to ensure that when public resources are invested in development, all Pittsburghers benefit. PHYLLIS CHAMBERLAIN Executive Director Housing Alliance of
