A public opening for the exhibition “Oaths and Epithets: Works by Sonya Clark” will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. Friday at the Society for Contempora­ry Craft, 2100 Smallman St., Strip District. Ms. Clark explores the stories buried within everyday objects from thread spools to gold, with a particular emphasis on the texture, styling and politics of black hair.

Ms. Clark is chair of the draft and material studies department at Virginia Commonweal­th University School of Arts, Richmond. She has exhibited on five continents, and her work is in collection­s including the Philadelph­ia Museum of Art and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.
