Let’s hope the Pirates’ Marte learns from his suspension
The suspension of Starling Marte is surprising but not shocking (“Pirates’ Marte Suspended for Using Steroids,” April 19).
Bending and breaking of rules is encountered in every level of our social institutions. We regularly read stories in the paper of wayward people getting caught in their self-centered behaviors. It is not unusual for folks trying to get ahead by any available means. It is hard to comprehend why Marte took performance-enhancing drugs, because he has great talent without using the drugs.
There will be those who will unforgivably criticize him for his lack of judgment. However, those critics should follow the old saying — first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. Hopefully, Marte will learn from his error. DAVID MARTINCEK
