Hawaiians respond
Hawaiians are responding to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ remark Thursday in which he dismissed the 50th state as “an island in the Pacific.”
Mr. Sessions was speaking about a ruling by a federal judge in Hawaii against President Donald Trump’s proposed travel ban.
“Excuse me?” Nadine Y. Ando, president of the Hawaii State Bar Association, said in an interview with The Washington Post. “We have been a state for 58 years. We’re not just some island.”
Others noted the comments were not only demeaning but geographically incorrect. Hawaii is not an island but an archipelago, or chain of islands. It consists of eight major islands and many islets.
