Bad start gets worse for Giants

-

The San Francisco Giants’ breakdowns are extending off the field.

After getting swept by the Cincinnati Reds in a threegame weekend series and getting outscored, 31-5, San Francisco had to scramble when one of its buses broke down Sunday about halfway on the drive to Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky International Airport in Hebron, Ky.

San Francisco, an NLworst 11-21, began its trip May 1 by winning at Los Angeles against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw. The Giants had not been outscored by 26 runs in a threegame series since 1894 against Boston, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

“We’re a funny club,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “You got to be careful that you do assume the attitude that, hey, we’ll be fine.

“We’ll be fine. But, we’re not fine now, and it’s time for us to do something.”

Mets

Matt Harvey will rejoin the rotation Friday at Milwaukee after serving a three-day suspension for not showing up at Citi Field for a game last weekend. “You make a mistake. You stand up be accountable and move on. And you know what, people forget about it,” manager Terry Collins said. He said Harvey will have to explain what happened to his teammates, and Harvey will decide “if he wants to do it in a group, which is the easiest, I always think, or if he wants to do it individually.”

Red Sox

Boston pitcher Steven Wright will miss the rest of the season after having surgery to restore cartilage in his left knee. Manager John Farrell said last week that no one specific thing caused Wright’s injury. The 2016 All-Star had some issues in spring training, then struggled at the start of the regular season. Recently he complained of discomfort in the knee before going on the disabled list May 2.

Braves

Atlanta released former National League MVP Ryan Howard from his minor league contract after he struggled at Class AAA Gwinnett. The Braves signed Howard, a longtime star with the Philadelphia Phillies, shortly after the season began. He was released Monday after hitting .184 with one homer and five RBIs.
