Steelers sign fifth-round pick

The Steelers signed fifthround pick Brian Allen to a four-year contract Monday. Allen, one of two cornerbacks the Steelers drafted, is the first 2017 draft pick to sign his rookie deal.

Allen played just two seasons on defense at Utah after starting his college career as a receiver. Allen, who is 6 feet 3 inches and 215 pounds, had five career interceptions for the Utes.

The Steelers also drafted Cameron Sutton out of Tennessee in the third round. Sutton is expected to contend for the starting job in the slot. Because of his size, Allen projects as an outside corner if he makes the 53man roster.

Financial terms of the contract were not immediately known. Under the terms of the 2011 collective bargaining agreement, rookie contracts are slotted, and there is little to negotiate. As a result most rookies come to terms with their teams before training camp.

Jets

Authorities say a wide receiver for the New York Jets has been charged with resisting arrest and obstruction of justice after sparring with officials at a Miami music festival. A Miami Police Department arrest report says 23-year-old Robby Anderson refused an order by a police lieutenant and pushed the officer and other officials at the Rolling Loud festival Sunday evening. An undrafted rookie from Temple, Anderson caught 42 passes for 587 yards for the Jets last season. In a statement the Jets said they’re “aware of the situation.”

CBS is making another change to its cast for the “NFL Today” show on Sundays, replacing Bart Scott with Nate Burleson. Burleson is the second newcomer to the program, with Phil Simms moving from the broadcast booth to the studio. Burleson played 11 NFL seasons as a wide receiver for the Vikings, Seahawks and Lions. He is co-host of “Good Morning Football” on NFL Network and will remain in that role. Burleson joins host James Brown, Bill Cowher, Boomer Esiason and Simms on “NFL Today.”
