Ex-Dukes teammates get minicamp invite
Duquesne teammates and former WPIAL standouts Dillon Buechel (McKees Rocks) and Wayne Capers Jr. (Chartiers Valley) have been invited to Steelers rookie minicamp.
Buechel left the Dukes as the leading passer in Northeast Conference history with 10,320 yards and 75 touchdown passes as a four-year starter. Capers Jr. a 2016 NEC first-team all-conference pick, had 22 total touchdowns (18 receiving) and 1,837 receiving yards in three years with the Dukes.

Pitt catcher Valerie Ortega was selected to the All-ACC freshman team after throwing out a conference-leading 13 baserunners and picking off another four. Ortega hit .238 in league play with 10 RBIs.

Andy Murray’s struggles continued with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to lucky loser Borna Coric in the third round of the Madrid Open, Defending champion Novak Djokovic defeated Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez, 6-4, 7-5, and four-time champion Rafael Nadal eased past Nick Kyrgios of Australia 6-3, 6-1, to make it to the quarterfinals. … On the women’s side, third-seeded Simona Halep of Romania reached the semifinals by beating Coco Vandeweghe than an hour. She will play Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia, who defeated Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, 6-3, 6-3. Kristina Mladenovic of France advanced to the final four by beating Sorana Cirstea of Romania, 6-4, 6-4, and will play eighthseeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, who easily defeated Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, 6-4, 6-0.
International hockey
Canada (4-0) rallied to beat France, 3-2, Thursday in Paris in the world hockey championship, breaking a tie early in the third period when the puck deflected past goalie Florian Hardy off French teammate Jonathan Janil. Marc-Edouard Vlasic was credited with the goal. Canada leads Group B with 12 points. In Group A in Cologne, Germany, Russia scored three goals in a 1:10 span in the second period in a 3-0 victory against Denmark and leads the group with 11 second.

Ajax withstood a brilliant comeback from Lyon to reach the Europa League final despite a 3-1 loss in Lyon, France. Ajax won the series, 5-4, on aggregate and will take on Manchester Celta Vigo, 2-1 on aggregate, in the final May 24 in Stockholm.
