Surprising Albert Gallatin stuns Penn-Trafford, 9-5

Albert Gallatin had not qualified for the WPIAL softball playoffs since 1999 and the Colonials aren’t ready to see their first postseason run in 18 years come to an end just yet.

Trailing by four after the first inning, seventh-seeded Albert Gallatin (18-3) rallied behind two home runs from winning pitcher Maddie Flowers and Maddy Hershberge­r to pull out a 9-5 upset over second-seeded Penn-Trafford (15-5) in the WPIAL Class 5A quarterfin­als at North Allegheny. The Colonials now are one win away from playing in their first WPIAL championsh­ip.

Albert Gallatin will take on the winner of Moon (11-4) and Franklin Regional (14-5). Their game was suspended Thursday night because of darkness in the top of the fourth inning with the Tigers leading 2-0.

Moon and Franklin Regional will resume play at 4 p.m. Monday at West Allegheny.

West Allegheny 7, Plum 0: Jillian Weber had a two-run single in the first, which was all junior starter Ashley Seamon needed as she struck out five in the shutout for the top-seeded Indians (19-1). a walk-off home run — the team’s third of the game — to lead off the bottom of the ninth to help the fourth-seeded Bucs (16-3) qualify for the semifinals for the third consecutiv­e season and first in Class 2A.

South Side Beaver 9, Serra Catholic 0: McKenna Smith threw a one-hitter, a single to the Eagles leadoff batter, and struck out 14 to lead the Rams into the WPIAL semifinals for the first time since they lost to Neshannock in the 2014 Class A championsh­ip.

Frazier 7, Laurel 6: The Spartans (11-5) scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but their comeback fell short as the No. 2 Commodores (16-2) moved into the semifinals. Class 1A

West Greene 17, Bishop Canevin 0: Linzee Stover drove in four as the top-seeded and defending champion Pioneers (20-1) moved into the semifinals in just three innings. Leechburg 15, California 2: Junior pitcher Morgan Pierce tossed a two-hitter,
