A former acting superintendent of the Moon Area School District who also was a principal in the district will be the new Moon Area superintendent.

Maureen Ungarean, who is currently director of early learning for Collier County Public Schools in Florida, was hired as superintendent Monday in a 6-3 vote by the school board.

She will begin her three-year term July 1 at a salary of $160,000.

Until then, the position of superintendent is being filled by acting superintendent Keith Bielby. Donna K. Milanovich, who had been serving as interim superintendent, was appointed by the board on Monday to serveas a consultant.

Former superintendent Curt Baker was suspended in December 2015, and his contract was terminated this month, effective February 2016. A state audit covering the period of July 2012 to June 2015 cited financial and safety problems in the district.

Originally from the Pittsburgh area, Ms. Ungarean was acting superintendent of Moon Area in 2013 and principal of Bon Meade Elementary School from 2010 to 2013. She has taught in the South Fayette School District and later held administrative positions in the Hopewell Area, Western Beaver and Sto-Rox school districts.

Ms. Ungarean, 46, has two children, who will attend Moon Area
