Crosby should remember that kids are watching

-

Most of the time Sidney Crosby’s behavior on and off the ice is such that he serves as a great role model for all. Unfortunately, Sid’s “head bouncing” move on the Nashville Predators’ P.K. Subban in the fifth game of the Stanley Cup final has the appearance of being an exception.

Sid should remember that, whether or not he desires it, many kids and young adults try to emulate him. If copied, actions similar to Sid’s in this incident are likely to contribute to more head injuries.

I understand that Sid is far more likely to be the victim than the perpetrator when it comes to “hockey muggings.” However, most of these other “muggers” are not role models, while Sid is. I hope that Sid gives additional thought to this incident and makes a public statement acknowledging the wrongness of his particular reaction to Subban’sholding actions.

Hockey parents everywhere, who would cringe at the sight of their child’s head being bounced off the ice as Subban’s was, will be grateful. And with the statement out of the way, with a clear conscience Sid can turn full attention to leading the Pens to anotherStanley Cup win. A.M. MARKS Riverside, Calif.

We’ve all heard about who homeless people supposedly are: panhandlers who make a living out of begging, or drug addicts who do not plan on using the money to buy food but instead to buy alcohol or drugs. In my opinion, this is all the more reason to help these desperate Americans.

Admittedly, this is a national issue. Most of us agree with Pope Francis. President Donald Trump’s main concern is money and how to channel more of it to his wealthy friends who are “bad hombres” without a conscience. Mr. Trump has no regard for those who cannot speak or act for themselves. We see these people, and we know they exist. Now is the time to take action.

We can tell ourselves that nothing can be done because of our present administration. We are Pittsburghers. Mayor Peduto, let’s start right here in Pittsburgh. Allocate funding to take care of our less fortunate, most needy, hometown folks. No one in this great nation deserves to live on the street. Where is our humanity? SUSAN RENNE

Peters Consider Charging Officer in South Side Arrest,” May 11). This is happening much too often.

A May 16 news brief reported there was an attack in which a man in Las Vegas died after police officers there punched him, shocked him with a stun gun and used a controversial neck restraint to subdue him (“Arrest Ends in Death”).

Is all this violence really necessary? Many times the officers are put on paid leave or given an inside job. What happened to these men in blue who are supposed to protect all citizens? I am afraid to look at a police officer because he may take it the wrong way. Please punish those who deserve it. I am sick at heart every time I read or hear about this brutality. LOIS NEWMAN

My husband, Charles E. Siebott,a 20-year Navy veteran, was invited by our great niece and nephews to Peebles Elementary School (North Allegheny School District)for its annual Memorial Day remembrance. Many other veterans and active-duty militarymembers participated.

The students listened as my husband spoke about his career, includingtwo tours of duty to Vietnam. They asked great questions and had the opportunity to peruse military memorabilia. They were engaged, interested and curious. We were thanked over and over again by students and teachers for participating in this event. We would be remiss if we did not thank the staff and students for the wonderful program, which included patriotic musical selections, flag-waving and handmade cards presented to each service member. We know it took a lot of hard work andplanning.

My husband and I are grateful that our children are being introduced to the sacrifices of those who served. We hope they will someday understand that freedom, indeed, is not free. IRENE S. KARAVOLOSSIEBOTT
