Carnegie Museum of Art adds to photography collection

The Carnegie Museum of Art has acquired five photographs by William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-77), a pioneer in thephotographic medium.
An inventor as well as a practitioner, Talbot was instrumental in the rise of paper-based photography. The museum describes him as a “true gentleman scientist of the Victorian period,” knowledgeable in chemistry, mathematics and optics, and informed in art, botany, the classics and foreign languages.
More than 30 images will be included in the exhibition “William Henry Fox Talbot and the Promise of Photography,” which opens Nov. 18 at the museum in Oakland.
‘Synesthesia’
Artist Elise Adibi, who blends the visual and the aromatic in her work, created the installation “Elise Adibi: Respiration Paintings” for the Greenhouse at The Frick Pittsburgh in Point Breeze. The paintings contain elements as varied as copper and essential plant oils and are expected to change during the exhibition, which ends Oct. 15.
On June 28, the artist will speak about her art and philosophyduring “Synesthesia: An Intersensory Evening with Elise Adibi” in the Greenhouse, on The Frick grounds and in its communityroom.
The evening will include wine, light hors d’oeuvres and conversation with the nationally recognized artist. Advance registration is required at www.thefrickpittsburgh.org or 412-371-0600 ($25, members $20).
Frick family silver
Morethan 500 silver objects that were part of the Frick family households have been gifted to The Frick Pittsburgh byHenry Clay Frick III.
The silver and silver-plate objects include both functional and decorative items. They were used by the family at its Pittsburgh estate, Clayton, at its New York residence and at Eagle Rock, a country residence in Pride's Crossing, Mass. A flatware service by Gorham Manufacturing Co. was used on the Frick family’s private rail car, the Westmoreland.
Other manufacturers include Tiffany, Dominick & Haffand Whiting.
Some of the silver will be displayed in The Frick’s Grable Visitor Center and at Clayton.
